Tuesday, August 23, 2011. I&M Canal: Replica Canal Boat Rides in La Salle, IL. One of the many reminders of the 19th century ingenuity that led to modern American is the Illinois and Michigan Canal that runs from Chicago to La Salle, IL. Completed in 1848, the 61-mile canal was created to form a link between the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico (connecting Lake Michigan with the Illinois River, which connects to the Mighty Mississippi and, eventually, the Gulf). http://theprairiestater.blogspot.com/2011/08/old-gebhard-brewery-morris-il.html
Tuesday, August 2, 2011. The Old Gebhard Brewery (Morris, IL). As we've written here before. You never know what history lies right in your backyard. Take, for instance, the old Gebhard Brewery building (what remains of it) here in my hometown of Morris, IL. In addition to the photos here in this post, you can view all my brewery photos here. The p...

The Prairie Stater: The Heroes of Seneca, IL
http://theprairiestater.blogspot.com/2011/08/heroes-of-seneca-il.html
Wednesday, August 3, 2011. The Heroes of Seneca, IL. Seneca, IL, is a small Illinois River town that sits in LaSalle County, IL (with a small portion in Grundy County), between the towns of Morris and Marseilles. That all changed a few weeks ago, when I learned that Seneca played a key role in America's victory effort during World War II. It turns out that Seneca wasn't just home to some shipyard — it was once home to a massive shipyard that constructed "Landing Ship, Tank" (LST). Here is a great article.

Wednesday, July 6, 2011. A Sense of Humor in the Middle of Civil Liberty. At a meeting in San Francisco, a colleague, Joe, asked where I'd be traveling this year, and then shared his own plans. Little did he know as he was speaking, he was setting himself up to become my newest traveling buddy. Where could we meet between CO and NY? How about an all American experience up the Mississippi to visit the sights of a few beloved Americans? Intrigued, Joe sent back an itinerary. Visiting the Lincoln Museum.

Tourists In Our Own City: Fun, Family-Friendly Adventures in the St. Louis Area. Wednesday, August 8, 2012. Springfield, IL: Land of Lincoln. Summer is quickly coming to end, and Casey still has lots of vacation time left at work. Casey and I took a weekend anniversary trip there a few years ago and loved it! People still do it today. After lunch...
