Life as a Peregrino on the Camino. June 12, 2015. As the two previous blog posts have shown, there was no shortage of wonderful scenery or amazing little things along the Camino de Santiago to fill every moment of my walk. In this post I would like to give you an idea of what it was like to be a Peregrino (pilgrim) on the Camino. Sustaining a long walk comes down to logistics: places to stay, food, water, and what to carry. And the Camino excels in all of these. I typically walked through three, four, or...

Stairway Wandering Along the Mississippi River – 2015. July 25, 2015. Two years ago my dog Petey and I traveled to the Mississippi River area and found several public stairways in Dubuque, Iowa; Redwing, Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Stillwater, Minnesota; Alma, Wisconsin; and Galena, Illinois. All of those stairways were described in previous posts in this blog. These closed stairs are where 5th Street in Alton would have intersected the main business area. This is West 7th Street in Alton. Although th...

https://thelatebloomerhiker.com/2015/02/06/the-pedro-fages-to-pacific-crest-trail

The late bloomer hiker. Adventures in hiking…. The Pedro Fages to Pacific Crest Trail. What makes this hike enjoyable are the wide open views as you start out in Mason Valley. One of the things that amazes me about southern California is the diversity of the land. Sure, it is dry and rocky in most areas, but you will find contrast all around. Today, the deep blue sky with scattered clouds was set apart from the rocky terrain of the Laguna Mountains. A “classic” Pacific Crest Trail sign. Today’s out...

Thursday, October 25, 2012. I just noticed that a hiker I briefly met in April 2008 will be speaking at a showing of a National Geographics film on the AT.
