Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum. Wednesday, December 28, 2005. The New York Sun has a marvelous compilation. Of this year's best Arab conspiracy theories, proving once again, in the great Bernard Lewis'. The kind of imagination that can turn [Abraham Lincoln's assassin] John Wilkes Booth into a Jew and make him a Zionist agent twenty years before the first beginnings of the Zionist movement obviously has no limits. My favorite conspiracy theory only barely makes the Top Ten:. Read it all. And weep. For his tir...

Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum: Why We Love Mark Helprin (IV)

Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum. Friday, September 01, 2006. Why We Love Mark Helprin (IV). The problem with war, as I have seen it, is not so much that it makes misery and grief - all of which would tend to come anyway, in time. Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum. Friday, September 01, 2006. Why We Love Mark Helprin (III). When I got back to Rome I discovered that the Italian Army considered me dead - in Gruensee, in the observation post, and on the Cima Bianca. That I was reported killed three times seemed not to affect their trust in the reports except to strengthen it. Being the army, they must have thought that anyone who was killed three times was most certainly deader than if he had been killed only once. Franklin D. Rosenfeld.
