http://fromthefieldbook.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
From the field book. Sunday, 22 August 2010. Great Hill and Black Brook. The skies were looking very changeable today as I set off for Great Hill. I'm glad I went because a wonderful spectacle awaited - well over a hundred swallows zooming around at low levels. As I paused to admire them, I wondered if the many short-tailed youngsters amongst them knew about the migratory adventures that lay so soon ahead. I decided to return. Monday, 16 August 2010. All the photos below are from the British Dragonfly So...
Birding North Northumberland
http://www.naturalbornbirder.com/uk/uk.php
My obsession with birds began on the NE coast of England where I grew up in one of the best birding spots in Northumberland: Stag Rocks at Bamburgh. With Lindisfarne (Holy Island) and the seabird colonies on the Farne Islands visible from the house it was inevitable that birding would form a substantial part of my life. I never had a chance. A selection of trip reports will be included below to indicate the birding potential of the area:. A respectable number of rarities have turned here with Isabelline ...

from the field book: OPAL Survey
http://fromthefieldbook.blogspot.com/2010/10/opal-survey.html
From the field book. Sunday, 10 October 2010. I've recently been working with a group to complete a clean air survey organised by OPAL. Open Air Laboratories). It involved measuring tree girths, counting fungal spots on sycamore leaves and identifying lichen on oak, ash and sycamore trees. The survey doesn't take long to complete and you could easily complete it in a local park or open area. What's more all the ID charts and materials you need are provided - a great teaching resource. From the field book.
Girl In The Hide: August 2009
http://girlinthehide.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Girl In The Hide. Confessions of a secret birdwatcher. Wednesday, 12 August 2009. I saw my first goldfinch this morning. A pair of them; parent and juvenile. They were in the neighbours' garden, which says something for leaving your green patch as a bit (I'm being kind) of a jungle. Last night we harvested our first beautiful juicy green pepper and four whopping leeks, so I'm sticking with our tidy(ish) veg patch though, birds or not! Girl In The Hide. Birding Trip to Iceland
Birding Trip to Iceland. Personal account of a trip to Iceland. Friday, July 30, 2010. 7-30-10 U.S. air force personnel were transferring through the Flug Hotel in Keflavik. It was good to see guys in uniform defending the country. In that hotel I tried to use the internet to update the blog, but the webpage gave an error message saying that I did not have permission. Taken from inside our plane as the sun went down. Taken inside the plane when the lights went out. Glad to be back. Posted by the Author.
