Confessions of a Train Geek: A CEMR Discovery

http://blog.traingeek.ca/2009/09/cemr-discovery.html

Confessions of a Train Geek. The world's longest running railway blog. Friday, September 25, 2009. When I was out railfanning yesterday. I saw a westbound freight on the CN Rivers subdivision that made me turn around and chase it. That train was the CEMR freight, heading to the CEMR Carman subdivision! I had not seen a CEMR train on the move before, so this was a must-see. I don't think the speed limit is very high on the Carman subdivision. This is typical of prairie branch lines! I would have liked to ...

Confessions of a Train Geek: May 2015

http://blog.traingeek.ca/2015_05_01_archive.html

Confessions of a Train Geek. The world's longest running railway blog. Saturday, May 30, 2015. Two Hours on the AVR. The Assiniboine Valley Railway. I spotted a notice on the Winnipeg Model Railroad Club blog. About a public "fun run day" where one could operate their trains as a conductor or engineer for two hours for $5. I jumped on this and signed up for the 9 AM-11 AM session. This was our train before we headed out:. Our power was boxcab #25. The boxcab is full of batteries that provide the motive p...

Confessions of a Train Geek. The world's longest running railway blog. Sunday, May 17, 2015. Book Review: Trackside in the Maritimes by Bill Linley. Bill Linley has finished his third book, "Trackside in the Maritimes 1967-1993" through Morning Sun Books. This book covers railway operations in the three Canadian Maritime provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island). Disclaimer: I consider Bill to be a good friend. The majority of the 235 or so photos. Were new to me, despite my occasio...

Confessions of a Train Geek: March 2015

http://blog.traingeek.ca/2015_03_01_archive.html

Confessions of a Train Geek. The world's longest running railway blog. Sunday, March 29, 2015. The "Buffalo slope" grain elevator in Magrath, AB. A uniquely Albertan phenomenon was the "Buffalo" grain elevators, built by the Alberta Wheat Pool. These elevators were an attempt to improve upon the wooden grain elevator, which was largely unchanged after decades of use. The intent of the Buffalo elevators was to improve capacity and loading speed, and perhaps to make them cheaper to construct as well. That ...

Confessions of a Train Geek: Elie's Station

http://blog.traingeek.ca/2010/08/elies-station.html

Confessions of a Train Geek. The world's longest running railway blog. Monday, August 02, 2010. I was in Elie, Manitoba a while ago and saw this structure. This HAS to have been a railway station. The style just screams "station" to me, from the freight door on the left to the slight bumped out center section to the lack of ground level windows on the ends, and the roof line. A cursory Google search showed nothing but I'm convinced this was a train station. Anyone have any proof? 2 August 2010 at 19:42.

Saturday, 8 August 2015. Just west of Fernie, BC July 26, 2015. Morrissey Mines is an abandoned coal operation just west of Fernie, BC. This is one of many old coal ventures that litter the Elk Valley. Named “Morrissey” for James Morrissey, a local pioneer. In existence from about 1902 to 1904. Morrissey Mines is where CNP Coal built their coke ovens. The townsite was not that far away. The ovens are just on the right, heavily obscured. No idea where this leads. There must be over one hundred of these.

Monday, 31 August 2015. Catholic Church in Guy, AB August 2, 2015. In parts of Alberta it is common to seen Catholic churches, schools, and what were once hospitals. Their churches always seem to stand out. Sunday, 30 August 2015. High Level Bridge, Edmonton, AB August 17, 2015. Friday, 14 August 2015. Taylor Siding August 13, 2015. This is what is left of the rail line. I walked across this wooden bridge. I will not do that again in the future, the wood is getting rotten. I also got eaten alive by bugs. A further advantage of exploring in winter. I found a couple of glass insulators in the brush. I posed one for a photo and left it at the scene. Cacti in Alberta. Not a big one. The first I have seen in this part of the province. 14 August 2015 at 07:09. Good place to explore!

Confessions of an SCA Geek. Reminiscing about life in the SCA in the 1980s and 1990s. Wednesday, March 21, 2007. I was reading a "Behind the Scenes" news article on CNN.com. About a woman who used her deceased husband's sperm to become pregnant. The husband was killed by a sniper in Iraq. It was interesting, but one phrase caught my eye. The "SCAdian Alert" alarm bell went off in my head. So, a little more Googling found an article on armytimes.com. That goes into more detail on the event. At times in my...

Bill shows us the Baldwin diesels in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island; the FM/CLC units in the Kettle Valley and the western prairies and of course those little CLC DTC side rodded units at various locations. If you are a CPR fan or just a fan of those transition years between the end of steam and first and second generation diesels you will enjoy the book. It is one of the best volumes I ...
