Bushranger: August 2014

http://boobook48.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Thursday, 21 August 2014. This flat worm is possibly Australoplana sanguinea. The same flat worm that has been discovered in southern England and Ireland in the last decade or so, introduced from eastern Australia. Thursday, August 21, 2014. Links to this post. Saturday, 16 August 2014. North of Goyder's Line. Mulga and termite mounds. Some thoughts on our trip north of Goyder's Line:. There's a lot of mulga vegetation in Australia. Let's hope it sta...

Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Friday, 15 November 2013. A cicada shell on our caravan wheel this morning- we only pulled in to this park at Lakes Entrance last night. Rugby Island, a breeding haven for Little Terns. Yellow Admiral, a bit tattered. Three pelicans and a swan, Metung. Night heron and terns, Metung. Friday, November 15, 2013. Links to this post. Bushranger: January 2014

http://boobook48.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Saturday, 18 January 2014. Barwon River above Buckley Falls. It was good to get out of the house this morning after a torrid week, four days above 41 °C. It was back to the low twenties and members of the Geelong Field Nats found the walk along the Barwon River very pleasant. View west from Newtown Lookout, smoke haze from the Grampian fire over the Barrabool Hills. Near the bridge on Geelong Ring Road where it crosses the Barwon. Links to this post.

Bushranger: Point Impossible

http://boobook48.blogspot.com/2015/04/point-impossible.html

Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Monday, 13 April 2015. There's a plant growing on the sand dunes at Point Impossible that I wanted to photograph. Today I had some free time so I took myself there. It turned out to be a beautiful calm day and I had the beach and estuary to myself. Thompson Creek, Point Impossible. Karaaf Wetlands, the area of saltmarsh starting to recover after a culvert was modified to allow tidal ebb and flow. Torquay is expanding in the distance. It's classified at '...

Bushranger: Mallacoota

http://boobook48.blogspot.com/2015/03/mallacoota.html

Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Sunday, 22 March 2015. Fishing is a foreign place to me, but, for those who have 'the knowledge' Mallacoota is a major drawcard. Pelicans and Silver Gulls know all about fishing as well. Or, at least, they know where fishermen clean their fish. Crested Terns and Silver Gulls dodging waves at Shipwreck Creek. A crab hiding between two of the eroded layers. Sunday, March 22, 2015. Dont go there in summer school holidays unless you book and like crowds.

Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Monday, 30 June 2014. Monday, June 30, 2014. Links to this post. Some of the fauna we saw in the Flinders Rangers. Of note were the hundreds of kangaroos of several species (Western Grey, Red and Eulo) feeding at all times of the day. We also saw a huge feral cat creeping its way up a rocky hillside. One of many in the Flinders I imagine. Monday, June 30, 2014. Links to this post. Monday, June 30, 2014. Links to this post. Tuesday, 24 June 2014. Yesterda...

Bushranger: July 2013

http://boobook48.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Friday, 26 July 2013. Pins in my garden. When I first saw this little bundle on bare dirt in my garden I thought it was a piece of fluff or hair. It's only a few centimetres high and glistens in the sun. Then I thought it must be a slime mould. But it turns out to be a fungus, and an interesting one at that. Is a relative of black bread mould, or Pin Moulds. Scientists have found it fascinating because it is light sensitive and rotates as it elongates!

Bushranger: The Inkpot

http://boobook48.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-inkpot.html

Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Sunday, 12 April 2015. The Inkpot, Lower Glenelg NP. We've travelled from far eastern Victoria to the western border. The Inkpot is a water-filled sinkhole in Lower Glenelg National Park, not far from Nelson in far-western Victoria. The water is inky black and reflects beautifully. Water level marks on burnt trees on the edge of The Inkpot. Sunday, April 12, 2015. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Follow Bushranger by Email. View my complete profile.

Crocodiles, again, and a few wild horses. Juvenile Nankeen Night Heron. Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Links to this post. Monday, 28 July 2014. As the plateau rose the continuous erosion has created spectacular landscapes of chasms and gorges along its 500 km length. Evidence that the thylacine once existed in this area. Crocodile beside Cahills Crossing.

Bushranger: February 2014

http://boobook48.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Wednesday, 26 February 2014. It's an insect that resembles a mantis, but it's not a mantis and it's not a fly. The Mantis Fly is related to lacewings and antlions, a member of the Family Mantispidae in the Order Neuroptera. I can't narrow this one down to genus level but it could be Campion. Several years ago I posted a photo of a Mantis Fly on this blog, here. Mantis Flies are attracted to lights at night but rarely seen during the day. I am in awe of b...
