‘The storytelling just works’ – The Fugitives by Panos Karnezis | Bookmunch
https://bookmunch.wordpress.com/2015/05/19/the-storytelling-just-works-the-fugitives-by-panos-karnezis
Book reviews and occasional interviews. 8216;The storytelling just works’ – The Fugitives by Panos Karnezis. In his choice of subject matter Panos Karnezis often seems to be channelling Louis De Bernières. So far he has covered rural Greece ( Little Infamies. Anatolian tensions ( The Maze. And his latest novel The Fugitives. Takes place in an unspecified Latin American country. Although that’s as far as the similarities go this time, as the main theme is religious rather than political. Judging by the la...

Book reviews and occasional interviews. 8216;They had the violence running those generations like a coal seam in the northern soil’ – Pig Iron by Benjamin Myers. Benjamin Myers writes in John-John’s voice; that of a traveller in Durham, an accent that has little in common with that of Brad Pitt’s traveller in the Guy Ritchie movie Snatch. Book reviews and occasional interviews. 8216;O’Reilly’s an absolute master at conveying a certain way of life’ – Greetings, Hero by Aiden O’Reilly. A début collection from an Irish writer who’s been knocking around the international short story scene for quite a few years now (think. We’re not sure. Let’s break it down. Been put off an otherwise decent book simply by the fact that it’s over three hundred pages? What’s our problem, then? The best counter-example to the passive/sexualized female occurs, in...

So, the PhD continues, and I'll tell you, writing what is effectively two books side-by-side is really a demented task. But if you're at a pub quiz and they toss you a zinger on time and narrative, or the temporality of trauma, or the narrativization of identity, or how one might variously contextualise the short story cycle, well! I'll be your phone-a-friend. I've got some flash fiction pieces forthcoming later this year in Sou'wester. As well, so more on that when the time is right, too. Was published ...
not exactly true: 'A Quick Fiasco' in Fugue, Issue 48
http://www.valerieoriordan.com/2015/06/a-quick-fiasco-in-fugue-issue-48.html
A Quick Fiasco' in Fugue, Issue 48. My story, 'A Quick Fiasco', has been published in Issue 48. The literary journal of the University of Idaho. It's part of my PhD manuscript and it's been a long time in the works, so if you read it, I hope you like it! It's got high drama and lots of swearing and I'm told it's pretty funny. It's the last story in the issue, p.85, and you can read it online for zero pounds. I also have three shorter pieces in the latest issue. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Here) I...

Ghanshyam Says: The Carnatic conundrum
http://ghanshyamsays.blogspot.com/2010/04/tani-avartanam-conundrum.html
Monday 5 April 2010. Yesterday evening, I was at a concert: Prasanna (guitar), Victor Wooten (bass guitar), Karthik (ghatam) and Bangalore Amrit (kanjira). I loved it. So did the rest of the audience, to judge by their reactions to Prasanna and Wooten's frenetic fretwork, and particularly how they cheered and whistled when Karthik and Amrit engaged in a percussion duel much like a Carnatic tani avartanam. I got a partial answer just after the concert ended, when I was discussing the experience with a fri...

Carys Bray: Growing things
http://postnatalconfession.blogspot.com/2015/06/growing-things.html
Monday, 29 June 2015. I'm in the middle of growing my second novel. I'm writing about allotments, and weeds, and sowing and reaping, which means that the time I spend at our allotment essentially counts as research. This makes me happy. I'm often asked whether A Song for Issy Bradley. I don't want to go all Donald Rumsfeld and start talking about known knowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns, but I like to write about a combination known and unknown (to me) things. Here's some pictures of the kno...
Ghanshyam Says: Armrest
http://ghanshyamsays.blogspot.com/2010/02/armrest.html
Tuesday 2 February 2010. Today, the right armrest of my office chair is at a higher level than the left armrest. I don't know how this happened, but it's created a curious situation. You see, this chair swivels. And I swivel a lot. And now, each time I swivel to my left, the right armrest hovers above the right CTRL key of my keyboard. I lean forward when I read stuff on the computer. Under the present circumstances, this causes the armrest to press the CTRL key. Chamomile tea, perhaps? New Delhi, India.

Saturday, February 25, 2012. Why pay for primary? Back to school for 2012: two excited monsters. So here we are biting into another year, and already I've had that earnest discussion with a group of ballet Mums. "I love the idea of Montessori, but why pay for primary school? Our primary schools are really very good .". And you know what? Allowing them to work on the floor? Mad hippy ideas, surely. Learning, not just tolerate it, or think of it as a chore. All children deserve it, in fact, and if only the...

Book reviews from Ali and Kim. October 13, 2011. Ashfall by Mike Mullin. Publisher: Tanglewood Press (September 27, 2011). Kindle: 345 pages / 476 KB. Many visitors to Yellowstone National Park don’t realize that the boiling hot springs and spraying geysers are caused by an underlying supervolcano. It has erupted three times in the last 2.1 million years, and it will erupt again, changing the Earth forever. The relationship between Alex and Darla is just one way that helps to show, even during this disas...
