Cuban Battlefields of the Spanish-Cuban-American War. Map of the Santiago Campaign. Operations of the Twelfth Infantry. A Spanish fleet had taken refuge in the harbor at Santiago in mid May 1898. American war planners felt that this fleet had to be neutralized to protect American operations in the Caribbean. When an attempt to seal the harbor failed, a land assault on Santiago was adopted as a means of forcing the fleet out to sea where American ships were waiting. Center for Digital Research Humanities.

Emancipation Petitions: Historical Contexts. Kenneth J. Winkle. Began advocating freedom, and several antislavery societies formed in the city. By 1860, Washington boasted the second-largest free African American population in the nation. African American leaders labored tirelessly through their alliance of two dozen churches to build an independent community and advance the goal of emancipation. The petitions have been manually transcribed by project staff and encoded according to the TEI Consortium's.
