An open letter to Vince Cable | countculture
https://countculture.wordpress.com/2012/03/07/an-open-letter-to-vince-cable
Open data and all that. An open letter to Vince Cable. Leave a comment ». I read with interest yesterday your letter to the Prime Minister. About some of the issues facing the UK in the future, and in particular the need for a vision and for a connected approach across government. This struck me as timely and useful, as it hopefully signalled the intention of a change in policy at one of the main roadblocks to innovation in improving government and fostering innovation. In fact, opening non-personal gove...
Planning Alerts: first fruits | countculture

Open data and all that. Planning Alerts: first fruits. Well, that took a little longer than planned…. I won’t go into the details, but suffice to say our internal deadline got squeezed between the combination of a fast-growing website, the usual issues of large datasets, and that tricky business of finding and managing coders who can program in Ruby, get data, and be really good at scraping tricky websites. Where we’re heading: a open database of UK planning applications. In short, we wanted to create th...

Open data and all that. How to help build the UK’s open planning database: writing scrapers. This post is by Andrew Speakman, who’s coordinating OpenlyLocal’s planning application work. As Chris wrote in his last post announcing OpenlyLocal’s progress in building an open database of planning applications. First, we’re going to use the excellent ScraperWiki. As the main platform for writing external scrapers. It supports Python, Ruby and PHP, and has worked well for similar schemes. We have some particula...

Open data and all that. OpenlyLocal info on your website, Part 1: Google Gadgets. As I promised at the excellent TalkAboutLocal unconference. In Stoke, I’ve been working on ways of helping non-techies use the local council data opened up by OpenlyLocal.com. The first of these is a Google Gadget, which can be added to your iGoogle. Page or your hyperlocal Blogger. Though writing a Google Gadget can be a frustrating business, adding and using it is a doddle. Basically, if OpenlyLocal. Go back to the iGoogle.

Sunday, 30 January 2011. Thanks to all the supporters and well-wishers who've got in touch to ask whether Reading List would be consigned into the nether yonder of the internet. I'm happy to announce that after some (much-discussed) changes the blog will resume postings (albeit in an initially scaled-down form). As a purely voluntary effort, Oranjepan was struggling to find enough hours in the day to properly maintain and monitor the 5,000 source sites and feeds. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Vine was alwa...

Thursday, 14 July 2011. Evolution of the Berkshire blogosphere continues apace, and to keep up with changes it has become necessary to change the template and redefine the system of blogroll used for listings over at the main RL page. Eventually this will mean a reduction in the quantity of blogs listed there, but this will soon be compensated by the inclusion of topic-based directories to allow for greater specialisation of focus and improved overall quality. Reading List: The State of the Political Blogosphere
http://bythemuddybanksofthethamesbbr.blogspot.com/2011/06/state-of-political-blogosphere.html
The State of the Political Blogosphere. It's well over a year since the last time I had a look at the state of political blogging in the county, and there have certainly been some changes! A number of stalwart blogs have closed operations, a range of new ones have started up and several have gone through a change of focus, but here is a compilation of the 42 most prominent active individual (ie voluntary) blogs with a primarily political focus, together with their local authority area:. Jane Is the One.

http://bythemuddybanksofthethameseditorspage.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 16 February 2010. 5,000 and counting! And so I continue to trawl through the local blogosphere using the variety of techniques and tools I've picked up on my travels. But today it's worth shouting about this milestone that I've reached - I have today discovered my 5,000th identifiably Berkshire blog! Although some are more active than others and there are some which defy description I have to admit I'm quite proud of this statistic. Now all I have to do is continue trying to categorize them all!

Create your own blog for free.

Monday, January 4, 2010. 01/04/2010 - Day 3. A couple really hard cravings today. Started thinking things like, "who gives a damn" and "you don't matter" and "you'll be dead soon anyway". Then I started bartering with myself saying, "Okay, you can have a beer but not a cigarette." or vice versa. All of it was really tough. Made it through though. No expenditures again today!
