It is on the east side of the Lizard Penisular. The nearby rocks known as The Manacles and have been the site of many shipwrecks, the name derives from the Cornish meyn eglos. An 18-gun Cruizer class brig-sloop, sank on 21 June 1809, with only 1 of the 126 on board surviving. Sank on 14 October 1898 with 106 fatalities.
