A 19th-century railroad depot in Wythe County, a 1930s-era Art Deco-style school that served the black community in Staunton and a historic district in Franklin County dating back to the 1780s and the founding of Boones Mill are among seven places recently approved for listing in the Virginia Landmarks Register by DHR in June. Recent News and Announcements. : The Department of Historic Resources (DHR) is discussing with the National Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC, a proposal to transfer certain non-Native American human remains to that museum for long-term curation and further study. The remains in question were recovered from 18th and early 19th century archaeological sites in Prince George and James City counties and the City of Williamsburg. DHR intends to brief the Virginia Board of Historic Resources at its September 18, 2014 meeting, and will request formal approval from the Board in December to carry out the transfer. DHR invites any person with interest in or concern over this proposal to comment accordingly. All correspondence received prior to October 15, 2014 will be considered during these discussions, and all public comment is appreciated. Please send correspondence to: Joanna Wilson Green, Easement and Stewardship Archaeologist, DHR, 2801 Kensington Avenue Richmond, VA 23220. Cemetery Workshop, October 3 and 4:. A two-day workshop led for by DHR staff members will address the proper care and maintenance of historic cemeteries and how to interpret funerary symbolism, among other topics. The workshop will be held Friday and Saturday, October 3 and 4 at the Menokin Baptist Church, located at 4459 Menokin Road, Warsaw. Early registration is encouraged as space is limited. The fee for both days of the workshop is $60 or $40 for attending only Friday s session. (The student discount is $40 for the two days or $25 for Friday s session. ) The workshop will be held rain or shine. It is recommended that participants pack a lunch for Friday s session. Attendance at Friday s workshop is a requirement in order to attend Saturday s workshop. Registration for the workshop closes Wednesday, September 24.
