Origins: Antarctica: Place: McMurdo Station | Exploratorium

https://www.exploratorium.edu/origins/antarctica/place/index.html

Antarctica is a continent devoted to science. At 14 million square kilometers (5.4 million square miles), it's larger than the continental United States, but smaller than the North American continent. It is home to 44 science stations from 18 countries around the world. While a few of these countries have made territorial claims to parts of the continent, the Antarctic Treaty. Roughly 1,000 people spend the summer in MacTown, as it's called. About 250 of them remain at the station year-round, through...

Science Activity: Make a Periscope | Exploratorium

https://www.exploratorium.edu/science_explorer/periscope.html

Two 1-quart milk cartons. Two small pocket mirrors (flat, square ones work best). Utility knife or X-Acto knife. An X-Acto knife is very, very sharp. Have a grown-up do all the cutting in this activity. Use the knife to cut around the top of each milk carton, removing the peaked roof. Cut a hole at the bottom of the front of one milk carton. Leave about 1/4 inch of carton on each side of the hole. Mark there. Now, use your ruler to draw a diagonal line from the bottom right corner to the mark you made.

Monthly Archives: June 2013. June 30, 2013. I’ll miss you Summer. Well, summer is coming to an end for me, short but sweet. I head into a new job tomorrow satisfied with all I’ve squeezed out of the last few months and a little nervous for new beginnings. During my time off it was my goal to:. 1) Dust off my creative side since my last job overpowered it into hiatus. 2) Spend more time with my kids, preferably adventuring. 3) Set up new habits to keep goals 1 and 2 continuing while employed. I will be wo...

Monday, September 29, 2014. Success through experimentation with edtech. I need to do some math one of these days: tracking all of the notifications of the "must-have" applications and other technology resources that I ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY MUST HAVE each school year. Then figure out how often I might be able to use any of those resources given a factor of how long it might take to test and become familiar with that resource and then attempt to integrate it in a lesson. Then, as a grade, teachers decide ...

Meagen Mitchell's Blog: Are We Story-Beings?

http://mitchmeagreen.blogspot.com/2010/11/are-we-story-beings.html

Sunday, November 14, 2010. Dr Patrick Lewis and the importance of story telling in classrooms. The basic principle of our mind is by story. There is a beginning, a middle, and an end. Teachers need to understand their own personal story, which is embeded in their values and beliefs. Do I have a story? What parts of my life would make up my story? All students have their own story, how can teachers discover the story of their students without intruding on their lives? Story is a powerful thing, why? There...

Monday, October 25, 2010. Journal Entry 8: Buying Locally. Food sovereignty was an important theme during our class camping trip. We had a group discussion about what food sovereignty was and talked about what issues food sovereignty breaks down into. How does it affect us? I want to see this for myself one weekend soon. If I start buying locally, how will this affect my lifestyle, health, and the organizations I am buying from? Yes it does, I know where the food is coming from, I have an idea of the lon...
