fishingnews.co.nz: Monday Fish 3, The Wairau Diversion, Spring Creek and Wairau River

http://www.fishingnews.co.nz/2012/01/monday-fish-3-wairau-diversion-spring.html

Sunday, 29 January 2012. Monday Fish 3, The Wairau Diversion, Spring Creek and Wairau River. The Tuesday after our last Monday fish, Jim turned up at my house on his way back from a swim, holding up a kahawai. He said his first attempt to grab the fish as it was lingering around some kelp made it get some life into it, but then he grabbed it near the tail and held on, and managed to get into onto dry land. We decided to have another fish the next Monday. I had an irate seagull diving and squawking at me ...

fishingnews.co.nz: Monkey Bay

http://www.fishingnews.co.nz/2015/04/monkey-bay.html

Sunday, 26 April 2015. While browsing some Marlborough Museum. Archive photos online recently, I noticed the photo below. And instantly recognised the view as Monkey Bay, just to the north of Rarangi Beach. Here's my photo today of the same scene. Looking south from Monkey Bay, Marlborough, New Zealand. The people in the old photograph are listed as:. Guard, Edward (Junior). It's hard to be exact on a date for the old photo, but I also found this one. That gives the year as "about 1887.".

fishingnews.co.nz: Superstition

http://www.fishingnews.co.nz/2015/07/superstition.html

Saturday, 4 July 2015. I wouldn't call myself superstitious, but I do often talk of luck in fishing, and I often ask someone fishing if they've had any luck. Over summer I thanked Jim. For a landing net he'd passed on to me, and told him of the trout I had landed with it. He said he was pleased that the net had proven lucky for me, as it had had for him in the past. A Dictionary of Superstitions. Edited by Iona Opie and Moira Tatem, tells of some old beliefs using trout, including:. Take a pie dish full ...

fishingnews.co.nz: Monkey Bay Revisited... with surf

http://www.fishingnews.co.nz/2015/05/monkey-bay-revisited-with-surf.html

Thursday, 28 May 2015. Monkey Bay Revisited. with surf. Continuing with the Monkey Bay. Theme, I popped over there yesterday to check out the massive surf that was coming in to Rarangi Beach. From the lookout point you could see the waves pounding into Monkey Bay, so I walked down the track to have a closer look at the cave that runs through to the other side and opens out towards Whites Bay (I didn't go through the cave - the waves were coming all the way through to the entrance on this side).

Here's no great matter: February 2015

http://prufrockian-gleanings.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Here's no great matter. A wargamer in Japan. Thursday, February 26, 2015. Ukraine '44 game wrapped up. Over the last couple of months, Kevin over at the Zhodani Commando blog. And I have had a game of MMP's Ukraine '44. On the go. We played using the VASSAL engine. And the Ukraine '44 module. The objective for the German player is to break out of the pocket or, failing that, to prevent the Soviets from taking three victory cities while also destroying more Soviet strength points than he loses himself.

http://prufrockian-gleanings.blogspot.com/2015/08/saxons-and-dip-before-and-after.html

Here's no great matter. A wargamer in Japan. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Saxons and the dip: before and after. This was going to be a quick, somewhat smug, post about how pleased I am with the dip method. I have a bunch of before dip photos (seen below), after which I dipped, highlighted, did the metallics and then sprayed with matt varnish. Sadly, despite doing a test figure that had no ill-effects, the Japanese humidity has ruined me. They are all struck with the dreaded frost! August 12, 2015 at 8:17 ...

http://prufrockian-gleanings.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Here's no great matter. A wargamer in Japan. Thursday, May 28, 2015. Now that my second Late Republican era Roman army is painted up thoughts have naturally turned to getting them to table, so last night I set up Pharsalus, using the Strategos II scenario for Lost Battles. Caesarians in foreground. Pompeians have the red shields. Pompey took a risk in charging from distance and using almost all the army commands in paying for three combat bonuses. On this occasion it came off splendidly). Caesar's men we...

Here's no great matter. A wargamer in Japan. Friday, January 30, 2015. Thoughts on Colleen McCullough. The recent death of Colleen McCullough has made me think back on her excellent First Man in Rome. In it, over the course of something like seven books, she traces the lives of Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Caesar and the early career of Octavian. And a pleasure to read for the enthusiast of the era who knows something of the stories. Monday, January 19, 2015. This has really piqued my interest in boardgaming a...

Here's no great matter: June 2015

http://prufrockian-gleanings.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Here's no great matter. A wargamer in Japan. Sunday, June 21, 2015. First foray into 1/700 plastic. I have a secret shame. The last few months I've been amassing boxes of 1/700 aircraft and buildings. I don't really know why, but every time I see a kit in a local hobby shot I've felt compelled to purchase it. I suppose I have vague notions of using them for some kind of WWII or Moderns air-warfare game, but it's all very hazy indeed. The thing is, how do you paint the blighters? Here's no great matter. A wargamer in Japan. Gallery: Heroics and Ros Modern Americans. The name of the vehicle or item pictured is written below. The image, and is followed by the Heroics and Ros. Code number in brackets. As an aside, the army list can be found here. On Luke Ueda-Sarson's site, and the data card is here. Luke very kindly made these up for me and if you are interested in the Cold War you can do a lot worse than take a look at Luke's Modern Spearhead. M125 81mm mortar (USM54). Strategia e...

Here's no great matter. A wargamer in Japan. For those who don't know Lost Battles, here is a brief guide to the abbreviations on the Cyberboard map:. BC - Brilliant commander (Hannibal and Scipio here). AL - Average leader (Masinissa here). AEL - African elephant unit (representing around 30 elephants and 1500 supporting light infantry). VHI - Veteran heavy infantry unit (representing 1500 men). AHI - Average heavy infantry unit (representing 3000 men). At this stage there have not yet been any attacks ...

Here's no great matter: Basing schemes for smaller armies

http://prufrockian-gleanings.blogspot.com/2015/08/basing-schemes-for-smaller-armies.html

Here's no great matter. A wargamer in Japan. Monday, August 10, 2015. Basing schemes for smaller armies. As my 'Dip' experiment turns into a project, thoughts naturally turn to how many of the little metal blighters I need, and how I'm going to base them. Unfortunately, I've since found that I don't like small armies - and DBA armies are small! But nor do I like the period enough to mortgage the house so that I can paint up armies to the size I do for my ancient. The plan as far as rules go is to use Dux...

Here's no great matter: A dip test

http://prufrockian-gleanings.blogspot.com/2015/08/a-dip-test.html

Here's no great matter. A wargamer in Japan. Thursday, August 6, 2015. I've been getting a little frustrated with my failure to make much of an indentation in the lead mountain, so I thought I would try something different from my usual painting method to see if I like the results. Yes, the dip. So here we are then. Block paint dullish colours. Add acrylic stain. Used as-is, and applied with a wet brush. August 6, 2015 at 1:11 PM. Thats the way to go! August 6, 2015 at 2:08 PM. Cheers to you, too :).

Farewell to a Fishing Companion. One day Tee Tee followed our neighbour Sonjia home from one of her jogs in Barker's Park, on the north-western chunk of Grand Cayman Island. The vet said Tee Tee must've been left in the park pregnant or with pups. We adopted her (she adopted us? After Sonjia moved to Miami. I've probably now spent more time fishing with Tee Tee than anyone else. No matter where we lived, Tee Tee always seemed at her happiest when out on the beach or adventuring somewhere.
