There appears to be a major archaeological monument on Hampstead Heath - a Bronze Age barrow, or burial mound. It stands near the top of one of the meadows, on the false crest, and it has been planted with trees to make it a feature in the landscape. Folklore calls it 'Boadicea's Grave', in the belief that Boadicea (Boudica) was buried here after she had been defeated by the Romans. The ponds are one of the glories of Hampstead Heath. They were created for a number of reasons, but the bigger ones were originally dug out as reservoirs for London's water supply in the 17th and 18th centuries. There are over 30 ponds on the Heath, but there are six major ones, in two different valleys, one of them in the valley of the River Fleet, here a very small stream. At the far end can be seen the dam, which separates this pond from the model boating pond beyond it.

Hampstead Heath is marvellous in the summer, and even satisfying in February in a muddy sort of way. But when it snows, it is transformed into a magic wonderland, as these photos, taken in January 2001, show. The northern slopes of Parliament Hill offer some of the finest vistas on the Heath. When it snows properly, this is the best sledging run on the Heath - indeed in London. On this occasion there was not quite enough snow - but it was magically for walkers.
