Walking the Cape: November 2012
http://walkthecape.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Explorations on foot in and around Cape Town. Meander along the Table Mountain Contour. The Table Mountain Contour Path archive is here. Brenda and I parked at Platteklip Gorge and walked down Tafelberg Road to the start of the Saddle Path. Up the steps we went. Alongside the path we saw clumps of the painted lady, Gladiolus carneus. Also spotted this yellow one, which I think is Sebaea exacoides. A powderpuff, Pseudoselago spuria. And one of the loveliest pelargoniums, Pelargonium myrrhifolium. Flowers ...

Walking the Cape: Franschhoek Open Gardens - Part I
http://walkthecape.blogspot.com/2012/12/franschhoek-open-gardens-part-i.html
Explorations on foot in and around Cape Town. Franschhoek Open Gardens - Part I. Jenny, Iain and Helen. The little town of Franschhoek is an hour's drive from Cape Town. This was my first visit to their Open Gardens. Our first stop was the Town Hall to get tickets, and then we set off on foot to see a couple of gardens in nearby van Wijk Street. Garden No.3 had an enormous Erythrina tree in the front yard. I liked the flower-filled wine barrels underneath it too. With such lovely pretty flowers! Hi, I'm ...

Explorations on foot in and around Cape Town. Strelitzia Season at Kirstenbosch. N: Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. The Kirstenbosch archive is here. I popped into the garden to see what was in flower in the seasonal beds. Wow. what a lot of colour! Ah, there's the striking Strelitzia, or crane flower. That orange is so bright! The yellow variety is known as 'Mandela's Gold'. Stunning! I also walked around the Glasshouse to see the succulents and bulbs. There are always interesting things to see here.

Walking the Cape: Franschhoek Open Gardens - Part III
http://walkthecape.blogspot.com/2012/12/franschhoek-open-gardens-part-iii.html
Explorations on foot in and around Cape Town. Franschhoek Open Gardens - Part III. Jenny, Iain and Helen. See also: Part I. The last few gardens on our tour were out of town. Our first stop, out on the Excelsior Road, was Sandstone House, a fairly new and rather grand and formal house and garden. This garden had lush green lawns and a couple of ponds. There was a fynbos section near the tennis court. I really liked the koi fish. I liked the cheerful window boxes in the swimming pool area. Is indoor outdo...

Walking the Cape: Stellenberg Open Garden
http://walkthecape.blogspot.com/2010/11/stellenberg-open-garden.html
Explorations on foot in and around Cape Town. In the Southern Suburbs. Stellenberg in upper Kenilworth is a gracious 18th century Cape Dutch manor house. For one weekend a year its large, well-established and beautiful garden is open to the public and it is a must-see for any garden enthusiast. It's famous for having various "garden rooms" done in different styles and showcasing a wide variety of plants. And gorgeous orange day lilies. I loved the star jasmine creeper on the walls. I've recently plan...
