I've been enjoying my time in San Diego, zooming around the freeways as I drive to the J-List San Diego office or run errands in preparation for the upcoming summer anime conventions. Driving in San Diego is especially nice when coming from Japan, a country where most time spent in the car is "city driving" with lots of traffic lights and road congestion, or infrequent trips on freeways that aren't free. (It costs around $18 in tolls to drive from J-List's home prefecture of Gunma into Tokyo, about 100 km/60 miles to the south. J-List is with me, and we've been visiting various places in San Diego that she hadn't seen before. Driving through one part of town, we saw a large Japanese-style traditional building, and my wife said, "Wow, there's a lot of Asian influence in San Diego, if they built a Buddhist temple here. " Knowing the interesting sushi restaurants that can be found in the U. , with amusing (to the Japanese) names like Wa Sushi, Godzilla Sushi and Domo Sushi, I was pretty sure the "Buddhist temple" was something else entirely. (It turned out to be a sushi restaurant called Hon Sushi, if you happen to be in the San Diego area and are hungry for sushi now. Driving in San Diego is more fun than in Japan; a "mansion" is a classy apartment building. Recently an American friend of mine who works as a professor at a Japanese university told me he bought a mansion, and I congratulated him on being so rich that he could afford a large house in Japan. We were kidding around of course: in Japan a "mansion" is what a condominium in a high-rise building is called, for most people the only way they can ever own their own home, since finding a patch of land for sale then building a house on it is an extremely expensive prospect. There are some other English words that mean slightly different things in Japan, including rouge (what lipstick is called), manicure (nail polish), hip (the buttocks), limousine bus (those comfortable buses they have at airports), cooler (air conditioner), and the bizarre "hormone," which in Japan refers to fried pork intestines, a delicacy of Osaka. Life is a little more fun when you know some Japanese, whether it's to communicate with nihonjin who can't use English or to catch the attention of cute coeds on campus. One word you can get quite a lot of mileage from is sugoi (sue-GO-ee), which means "amazing" or "incredible" and which can be used just about any time you need to express awesomeness. See a Japanese man who's adept at playing the Super Mario theme on an accordion? Just tell him sugoi! and your meaning will be instantly communicated. Then there's daijobu (die-JOE-boo), which means "okay" or "alright" and is generally one of the first words a person learns after arriving in Japan (well, after biiru o kudasai "please bring me a beer" anyway). Finally, the word naruhodo packs a lot of meaning into those four syllables, essentially expressing "I see" or "that's right" or "what a brilliant suggestion, you have changed my viewpoint 180 degrees. J-List loves ...
