http://jennylucascopywriting.blogspot.com/2011/09/to-hyphenate-or-not-to-hyphenate.html
Saturday, 17 September 2011. To hyphenate or not to hyphenate? The hyphen can be a great piece of punctuation that adds clarity to your copy. However, overuse can have the opposite effect – it can interrupt the flow of your words and make your reader stumble. My advice is to use hyphens sparingly and rephrase what you write rather than use too many. When to use a hyphen. Using hyphens with prefixes. Is a good example, as are semicolon. However, there are some instances when you must use a hyphen. This ru...

Sunday, 7 October 2012. What are your customers buying? It’s a question every business should be asking when putting together their sales literature — and it doesn’t have a literal answer. If you really want to sell your product or service, don’t look at. You are selling — look at. Your customers are buying. Understanding your customers and what persuades them to buy is the basis of any successful sales campaign. Start by identifying your main selling points. What problems does it solve? Do you need some...

Jenny Lucas Copywriting Blog: Why attention to detail gets my vote.
http://jennylucascopywriting.blogspot.com/2015/05/why-attention-to-detail-gets-my-vote.html
Saturday, 2 May 2015. Why attention to detail gets my vote. As a copy-editor, I read with interest the recent story about the English teacher who decided to mark the UKIP campaign flyer. That was posted through her door. The flyer said all the right things with its positive news, worthwhile work and persuasive policies. But it was also a mess of spelling errors, wrongly used words, terrible grammar and misused punctuation. The flyer had a hidden message. We couldn't be bothered. We don't respect you.

Sunday, 5 May 2013. Ten reasons why your website isn't working. Is your website working as well as it could? Previously I have talked about website content and SEO on this blog. However, the appearance and functionality of your website is equally important. Here are ten reasons why your website may not be working as well as it could be. 1 Your website takes too long to load. So your website loads pretty quickly on your super-fast, fibre-optic broadband, but what about on lower-speed services? This may se...

Jenny Lucas Copywriting Blog: Why cost shouldn't be your only consideration when hiring creatives
http://jennylucascopywriting.blogspot.com/2014/01/why-cost-shouldnt-be-your-only.html
Monday, 6 January 2014. Why cost shouldn't be your only consideration when hiring creatives. This is a true story. For my fellow creatives, this is an anecdote. For me, it was a lesson. For anyone thinking of hiring creatives, it's something to think about. This happened to me when I first started freelancing. The details are inconsequential, but I think the results show why hiring creatives cheaply can be a false economy. A company was looking for a copywriter. I didn't get the job. I was never given th...

Jenny Lucas Copywriting Blog: Words that cheapen your business
http://jennylucascopywriting.blogspot.com/2012/04/words-that-cheapen-your-business.html
Wednesday, 18 April 2012. Words that cheapen your business. Are the words you are using to promote your business really doing you any favours? Always presume that quality is important to your customer. If you were to ask a customer their main consideration when making a purchase, price would be one of the top answers. However, it would be a mistake to think that this is the only factor. As a general rule, there are three scenarios where customers will put price before anything else:. If your copy needs a...

Jenny Lucas Copywriting Blog: The difference between content-editing, copy-editing and proofreading
http://jennylucascopywriting.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-difference-between-content-editing.html
Saturday, 8 September 2012. The difference between content-editing, copy-editing and proofreading. What does a content editor do? If you are trying to save money by writing your own copy, you may decide to hire a content editor at the start of your project — when the copy has been drafted, but still needs work. The content editor is primarily concerned with the content, structure and readability of your copy. He/she will also work on your wording, phrasing, spelling, punctuation and grammar. The copy edi...
