Jim Long's Garden: St. John's Wort in the Landscape

http://jimlongsgarden.blogspot.com/2014/07/st-johns-wort-in-landscape.html

St John's Wort in the Landscape. We're fortunate to have several St. John's Worts in our area and they are at their finest in mid to late July. This one is known as shrubby St. John's Wort. Shrubby St. John's Wort (Hypericum prolificum). Shrubby St. John's Wort flowers. The late Billy Joe Tatum described the fragrance of these as akin to a pleasant burnt sugar or butterscotch smell. The spent flowers turn a pleasant shade of butterscotch-orange. Common St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum). Growing in o...

Mint is Trendy Again. Mentha spicata 'Blue Eye'. Mint (Mentha spp.). Bar owners have realized that all ice isn’t the same. Commercial ice, as well as ice out of the ice machines, contains air and minerals. Ice with air melts faster and the minerals change the flavor of the drink. Many high-end establishments now have full-fledged “Ice programs” which produce ice for their cocktails that are better tasting, more attractive and, yes, worthier of premium prices. Mint 'Berries and Cream'. You bet there is!

Hardy Rosemary - Arp. Arp and Hill Hardy rosemary. I've long wondered how 'Arp' rosemary got its name, and I admit I always thought it an odd choice for a plant name. While visiting Festival Hill a couple of years ago, I was pleased to share breakfast with Gwen Barclay and Henry Flowers. Gwen, as many of you may remember, is the daughter of the late Madalene Hill (whose incredible rosemary collection resides at Festival Hill). Henry Flowers, Horticulturist at Festival Hill. You mean Arp is a place? You w...

Jim Long's Garden: September, Hot Sauce Time!

http://jimlongsgarden.blogspot.com/2014/08/september-hot-sauce-time.html

September, Hot Sauce Time! Hot sauce can be made from any peppers you grow. This has been an outstanding year for peppers and tomatoes in our area. We've been canning spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce and tomato juice, and now it's time to turn attention to making hot sauce. For winter and gifts. One of the reasons I write books is so I can keep track of my recipes and my hot sauce book is a good example. When I wrote it, I tried and tested my recipes. 40 pages of my own favorite recipes. 3 Refrigerate for u...

Elements of a Successful Farmers Market. A thriving, robust farmers market is an asset to any community. Farmers markets date back to the beginnings of our nation. Often the market was informal, simply a gathering of farmers who drove their team and wagon to the town square and sold their excess produce. The historic Soulard Farmers Marke. After World War 2, at the beginning of the Baby Boom. Water for vendors and visitors. Here's my list of what it takes for a successful farmers market in a community:.

Frittata, grilled salmon, beet greens and beets, not especially pretty, but tasted good. 4 eggs, beaten.

For many years I've been growing what was the World's Hottest Pepper, the Bhut Jolokia, or Ghost Pepper. In my book, Make Your Own Hot Sauce. I give some background of the pepper and offer a few recipes in using it in hot sauce. This year for the first time, I'm growing the current record holder for the world's hottest pepper, the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion. Later today I'll be making a batch of hot sauce with both of these peppers. The two world's hottest peppers. In other words, it's pretty darned hot!

Step 3, When your wreath is finished, trim off any extra ends that are sticking out and put the wreathes in a dark place, like a pantry, on paper and let them dry until crisp. To use the wreath,...

Order Seed from ReneesGarden Helps Kids. A few of the 500 kids in one of their 3 gardens at school. Kids gardening is important! When kids learn how to grow plants, learn where their food comes from and how to prepare healthy meals, they learn skills that will stay with them for their entire life. I've written about the amazing kids' garden project. At the magnet school in Jonesboro, Arkansas, several times before. (. Click here to see an earlier post and more photos). Jim Long's Columns: Papalo, Herb to Know

http://jimlongscolumns.blogspot.com/2014/02/papalo-herb-to-know.html

Papalo, Herb to Know. Recently I've been working on a couple of magazine assignments about the hot new herbs and plants for 2014 for restaurants. My research started with new restaurant trends on-line, then I've been concentrating on interviews with chefs around the country. Not surprisingly, locally sourced produce is even bigger this year than last, new introductions of non-wheat pasta and noodles, sustainable seafood and children's menus in upscale restaurants are a few of the items. Here's a simple r...

Mildew and Root Rot Problems in the Garden. Powdery mildew can affect bee-balm (Monarda) as well as roses, squash and other plants. Cool, damp weather encourages a new set of problems in the garden. We’ve had rains, chilly nights, humid and cloudy days, all things which create conditions for fungus and mildew to grow. If let untreated, either of those can slow down or kill garden plants. There are some simple solutions and remedies that cost little and are effective. Pepper plant suffering from root rot.

Jim Long Remembered

Friday, March 15, 2013. The half century mark. Today would have been Jim's 50th birthday. When things first started getting bad, 5 and a half years ago, I nevertheless hoped he would make it to this birthday "on this side of the grass.". I continue to believe that he is watching over me, and us, from "beyond the stars.". Jim's Wife, Judy Long (aka Judith Pfeffer). Monday, July 2, 2012. True heroes and unbelievable courage'. I wish you all peace, liberty, justice and the pursuit of happiness and purpose.

Jim's Chicken Tortilla Soup. I've tried tortilla soup in many restaurants over the years, some are ok, some have left me wishing I'd ordered something else. This week I was inspired to make a batch myself. I began by looking at recipes online, some sounded good, some were downright goofy. I think I'm a pretty good soup maker so I was pleased at the compliment. I have to agree that it is the best tortilla soup I've ever eaten. Don't be put off by the ingredient list, it's worth the effort. 1 onion, chopped.
