December 21, 1866. From Missouri to California, the California Trail was traveled by western settlers starting in the 1840s. When gold was discovered in Montana, settlers blazed the Bozeman Trail, branching off the California Trail in Wyoming, and cutting off 400 miles of the journey to the gold mining areas. The trail ran through Sioux hunting land, and they were understandably suspicious. A conference failed to allay their concerns, and hostilities began. Fetterman Leaves the Fort.

June 25, 1876. From Near the Visitors Center. Custer and his own group were killed in the fenced off area atop the hill. From Part Way Down the Hill. Custer's own small group was killed on top of the hill on the far right. Many of his men were killed all along the hillside. From Further Down the Ridge. Custer's own small group was on top of the ridge in the second picture from the left. The ravine can be seen on the far right. The ravine extended far up the hillside. Although the French attacked and did significant damage to an advanced British force, and even attacked Fort Ligonier itself, the British arrived at the forks to find Fort Duquesne abandoned and burned. In its stead, they would build a much larger Fort Pitt. Both it and Ft Ligonier would be attacked by natives in Pontiac's Rebellion in 1763.
