Scott's Journal
Here it is, my useless waste of cyberspace. Tuesday, January 15, 2008. I haven't written anything for a while in this forum, but there's a very good reason for that- there's not a whole lot to report. I'm in the purgatory of Army. Schooling, and it's not a music-rich environment to say the least. But after a few very slow months, an eventful day today. Two days ago I received notice that. Didn't win the NBA/Merrill Jones Band Composition Contest. This good news led to a friendly call to Dave McKee. Thoug...
Decomposing | J. Scott McKenzie
http://jscottmckenzie.com/category/decomposing
Composer, Arranger, Conductor. Composing in the desert. December 29, 2013. You often read about artists and composers who are inspired by nature or their surroundings. Many are convinced that the quality and the type of art they create is a direct result of the environment in which it was created. If this were true in my case, the music I’ve written lately would be brown, drab, boring, and just flippin’ ugly. Posted in Army music adventures. March 18, 2008. The other piece I finished was. When they gave ...

http://blog.jscottmckenzie.com/2007_06_01_archive.html
Here it is, my useless waste of cyberspace. Sunday, June 24, 2007. I originally planned on using this blog to post only things related to my own composing and arranging efforts. But I thought it would also be alright to comment on events that are a result of my role as a military musician. By virtue of my position, I get to do some pretty cool things! First, a field's-eye view of the band in place:. Here's a couple shots of me conducting the American anthem:. Sunday, June 24, 2007. Tuesday, June 12, 2007.

Scott's Journal: Observations from the Berlin Philharmonic
http://blog.jscottmckenzie.com/2007/05/observations-from-berlin-philharmonic.html
Here it is, my useless waste of cyberspace. Tuesday, May 15, 2007. Observations from the Berlin Philharmonic. Anne and I went to see the Berlin Philharmonic this past weekend. When I saw that they were performing 'Petrushka' and Mahler's Symphony No. 1 (two pieces I studied in college), the search for other anniversary destinations was over as far as I was concerned. Thankfully, Anne agreed. :). Of course, the orchestra played fantastic, but I marveled at some other aspects of the experience. No, there w...

Here it is, my useless waste of cyberspace. Monday, April 23, 2007. And now, only a month late, are some pictures from the Fanfare for Enduring Freedom performance. A family vacation covering four countries on two continents has precedence on maintaining a timely website, not that anyone's reading this blog anyway (except you.hi, Mom! So, the above picture is of course me conducting the piece. Below is a shot to give you an idea of how far away the musicians were up on the balcony. Monday, April 23, 2007.

http://blog.jscottmckenzie.com/2007_01_01_archive.html
Here it is, my useless waste of cyberspace. Tuesday, January 23, 2007. Black Tie Blu-bop premiere. This past weekend was the Virginia Tech Honor Band Weekend and what a great time it was! I really enjoyed meeting up with old classmates and new friends. It was great to see so many familiar faces and to catch up on all the gossip. I'll admit, though, that I should have asked more questions earlier in the discussion phase- who knew this band would be a hundred strong? Tuesday, January 23, 2007.

Scott's Journal: Return to the States
http://blog.jscottmckenzie.com/2007/10/return-to-states.html
Here it is, my useless waste of cyberspace. Monday, October 08, 2007. Return to the States. I haven't posted anything new for a couple of months because a) I was overwhelmed with all the tasks involved in moving your family and all your stuff back from three years of living overseas, and b) there wasn't anything to report anyway. Was not a winner of the Dallas Wind Symphony Fanfare Competition this year, but I still think they're a pretty good band (. Monday, October 08, 2007.
