On June 21, a summer program that caters to top middle school students will end, a casualty of deep budget cuts in Troup County schools to make up for an impending $7.2 million deficit. Over the course of 12 years, Troup County School System has served more than 2, 700 rising sixth, seventh and eighth grade students participating in the Junior University phase 1 program, said Tina Duckett, Troup County School System director of public relations. This summer enrichment initiative has provided students with an array of learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom. It is with regret that program operations will end June 21, 2012. Junior University phases 2, 3 and 4, which helps prepare high school students for SAT and ACT tests and assists with college applications, will still be funded. Both programs are held at LaGrange High School. Junior University phase 1 this years serves about 350 children. The summer program gives rising sixth, seventh and eighth graders a month to learn in a setting that puts emphasis on hands-on exercises, practical applications of skills and preparing them for life in and after high school. Junior University began in 2001 as a Troup County School System program aimed at academically talented middle schoolers, said Ann Rhodes, Junior University phase 1 overseer. To be eligible for the program, a student coming into middle school was required to score in the 90th percentile of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills ITBS and Criterion-Referenced Competency Test CRCT. The program was designed to give its students a head start, Rhodes said. Junior University is currently running until its June 21 graduation. Teachers there have been striving during the program s life to instill in their students outside-the-box thinking through hands-on projects. Learning outside the box. We want them to go above and beyond what they do in a typical school year, Rhodes said. We want students in Junior University to think outside the box. In Charles Freeman s seventh grade computer science class, students use computers to research information on biology. They also make experiments demonstrating what they d learned. One of the projects uses rubber bands, paper clips and toilet paper tubes, they constructed model arms that moved and labeled all the parts. It s a working arm. You can pull on it and it moves, Freeman said. In Susan Ayres seventh grade guidance class, students learn to work in group settings to prepare for work environments, like using a game where a group passes a ball for a period of time and if someone drops it, they start over. They then upped the challenge with the groups tossing two and three balls at a time. They had a lot of fun, Ayres said. But the point is to furnish knowledge, and they all got it. They all knew why they did the game. Later on, they may not remember everything we talked about in class, but they ll remember that game. In an upstairs hallway of LHS, Sonya Delaney-Brown, a sixth grade language arts teacher and nine-year JU teacher, fashions togas on her student ...
