Friday, 24 April 2015. 24th April 2015 - Priming the cowl. The last few days have been an endless round of spray, sand, fill, re-sand, respray but finally the cowls are ready for top-coating - not perfect but perfectly acceptable. Hopefully the top-coat will go on OK without too many embedded insects! 24th April 2015 - Priming the cowl. 15th April 2015 - Finishing painting and re-instal. 14th April 2015 - Painting the engine. 10th April 2015 - It is officially spring, let wor. Tailwind Build in Minnesota: Way too hot in the garage

Tailwind Build in Minnesota. This is my build log, experiment, and way to share my project. I am building a Wittman W-10 Tailwind and want to share the experience with whoever finds these pages. Friday, June 18, 2010. Way too hot in the garage. It has been really hot and humid here the last few days. It has kept me out of the garage. On Tuesday a friend of mine Mike P. in Minneapolis (he is building a Buttercup) sent me a message. He wanted to rub it in that he has an A/C unit in his garage.

Tailwind Build: 15th April 2015 - Finishing painting and re-installing the engine
http://tailwindbuild.blogspot.com/2015/04/15th-april-2012-finishing-painting-and.html
Thursday, 16 April 2015. 15th April 2015 - Finishing painting and re-installing the engine. The extra paint arrived this morning so I could complete the painting of the engine. Then I started to re-install the ancillaries doing as much as possible before re-mounting the engine to make access easy. The engine hoist was then positioned to allow the engine to be bolted back onto the mount. Parallel mount engines are so much easier than dynafocal! That is one more line in the final to-do list.

Tailwind Build: August 2013
http://tailwindbuild.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Thursday, 22 August 2013. 22nd August 2013 - Sealing the right wing interior. The interior of the wings are sealed to avoid any risk of the wood deteriorating over time with moisture. As before two pack Randolph Epoxy varnish was used. The top skin was masked so that the glue lines can be kept free of varnish. The right wing contains the VOR/glideslope antenna. This is a dipole with a tuned balun. It was made based on instructions from Bob Archer. 19th August 2013 - Wing leading edge. Once the glue was s...

Tailwind Build: November 2013
http://tailwindbuild.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Monday, 11 November 2013. 11th November 2013 - Painting, painting, painting. Despite the lack of posts I have been working over the last few weeks. The left wing has been completely painted and once fully hardened wrapped in bubble wrap and transported to my friend Paul's house for storage. The doors have been finished inside and out. Also, all the flying surfaces have now been finished to a good standard. The newer EkoPoly Premium paint is much easier to apply without runs. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Tailwind Build: January 2013
http://tailwindbuild.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, 13 January 2013. 13th January 2013 - Left wing top skin. Still I enjoyed the hour spent sanding it off where it shouldn't have been in the first place. Note for next time use a plastic tape. The glue can now set overnight before I remove the clamps but even with them and the nailing strips in place the aerofoil already looks superb. It is no wonder the Tailwind is so fast with such an elegant thin section wing. Friday, 11 January 2013. 11th January 2013 - Left wing plumbing and wiring. Next job i...
