Nursing and Medical Career Information. Show Navigation Hide Navigation. CNA Classes: How to Choose a Good School. If you ve spent any time thinking about becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, you know that you need to take a course that teaches you the skills you ll need to know in order to both pass the CNA exam, and also to help you future patients. Many people think this type of education is a time consuming process, but the truth is that CNA training doesn’t take much time at all (in comparison to other degrees and certifications). Typically, it takes a few months of CNA classes to prep you in order to become a CNA, and then a little bit more time to do your clinical hours and also take the state exam. Once you pass the CNA exam for your state, you ll be able to apply for a listing in the nurse aide registry and start working. One important thing to think about is that where you go to schools truly matters in terms of passing the state exam (trust me, I know). Some schools are better than others, and you might fail the exam the first time if you don t choose a school carefully enough. On top of that, the school teaching your Certified Nursing Assistant program might not be up to par and you ll have to learn a lot of skills on the job. The moral of the story here is to make sure that you spend some time choosing a reputable, good school in order to ensure that you receive the best training. So that raises the question what distinguishes one school from another, or one CNA class from another? It can be hard to tell based on one school s website or other factors, but there are some things that you can do to find a good program. First of all, you need to look at the school s reputation. Do they have testimonials on their site from other students that are verifiable? Are they well known within the community? Check with other nurses or CNAs to find out about their reputation. Doing this will help you avoid bad school. Secondly, you need to spend some time looking at their credentials. Are they registered with your state s department of education, or do they appear to be a fly-by-night operation? Reputable schools will be able to provide references and show you their accreditations, where less reputable schools will not. In the end, choosing a good place to take your CNA training is essential, and it s entirely a decision that s up to you, so make sure that you take your time and evaluate all of the schools, options, and don t let anyone rush you into the process! Can You Actually Take Your CNA Classes Online? You ve most likely seen and heard all of the advertisements everywhere regarding online school. They are on the internet, on the television, and in a number of other places. This leaves a lot of people wondering whether or not online school is legitimate, and whether or not you can study to become a CNA online. The answer to this question is: it depends. The truth is that some states do allow you to CNA classes online, but you ll always need to do your clinicals in person. Clinicals are the part of you training where you learn hands on skills and work with patients. One thing that can t be overstated is that you aren t able to take 100% of your classes online and have no physical training. I ve researched schools in all 50 states, and never been able to find a listing of the requirements where you can take everything online and then obtain your certification. Anyone who tells you that is the case simply doesn t have their facts straight! Although this might seem a bit unfair, the reasoning for this is because you need to actually see things in person in order to understand them. As useful as it is, you can t touch a patient over the internet, or learn other things that you need to know in order to help them. The internet has done wonders for our society and has changed the way we live, but it still has its limits, and medical training is one of them. Another important thing to mention is that if you re someone who h ...
