A Mathematician's Sociology: You Better You Bet
http://a-mathematicians-theology.blogspot.com/2014/03/you-better-you-bet.html
Random thoughts from a random fellow. Tuesday, March 11, 2014. You Better You Bet. This one is due to Marcus de Sautoy but it came up last night again. It's the ultimate insult to a mathematician, the one that makes you reach for your gun. Don't say "it's not rigorous". If you say "It's not elegant" then we can argue or we can admit "yeah it's not really, maybe we can find a neater way". (Or just "heigh-ho".). If you say "It's not useful", we say "so what, who cares? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Random thoughts from a random fellow. Wednesday, October 07, 2015. Get Off My Cloud. See when you belong to a "certain category" you are expected to sort everything out yourself, and someone will make that very clear to you. But when you are in "another category" you don't have to, you can tell that same someone who will tell someone else to send something on your behalf. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). A Mathematician's Sociology: January 2013

Random thoughts from a random fellow. Thursday, January 24, 2013. Except it isn't available. Used to be that libraries were quiet places. A respite to ponder, read, browse in peace. The customers are no better. Seems like the library is a place to meet your mates for a conversation. Why not go to the coffee shop? And when the assistants are helping customers, it would be good if the customers went up to the desk, particularly if they're a bit deaf, so that the conversation could be quiet?

A Mathematician's Sociology: February 2014

Random thoughts from a random fellow. Thursday, February 06, 2014. Once upon a time, there was a magical kingdom with a beautiful princess. Truly life was wonderful. What a lucky girl she was. Some of her friends asked why she was so lucky, but she didn't know. But it didn't bother her. She just looked forward to the next exciting adventure. Would it be a meeting with a prince? A magic carpet ride? So long as it was lovely she didn't mind. Every day should be like this. Links to this post.

Musings from the journey. Serve thee as thy hosts above. Outro: Last Words →. Words and the Word. 25 December, 2014. Creating and sustaining God, as we meditate upon your word to us in scripture may your Living Word once again dwell in us that we might shine as your light in the world. Amen. It’s only words,. Monday, November 19, 2007. Learning to love liturgy! I think one of Martyn Atkins. Most favourite stories (I'm only judging this on the amount of times I heard it over my 3 years at Cliff - sorry Martyn! Was that of Terry Waite's return to the UK after his captivity. He was asked by reporters what means did he use to survive his time, and the answer came, unsurprisingly unreported, that his survival was due to the Daily Office (Anglican daily prayer) that he knew by heart. 8230; and I'm looking for the key. For prayers it’s the best. Asymp; Leave a comment. Every year the Methodist Church produces a prayer handbook. It’s full of reminders that we are a world church with 80 million members. Each day there is an encouragement to pray for specific parts of the world and part of Britain with prayers written by Methodists around the wider Church. It is, without exception, the best thing Methodism publishes, and informs the prayers of Christians every day. A louder note …. Twitt...

Theological Reflections of a Tent Maker Minister. Saturday, 31 January 2009. The Art of Camping. So onto the last of Hugh's obstacles to tentmaker ministry. The living out of the priest’s office seems often to drift from the ontological and inspirational to the functional and tired. Of course there are exceptions, but many parish clergy drift towards becoming museum attendants: preserving the artefacts, discouraging innovation and preferring well behaved visitors who admire the exhibits. Such practice is...
