30 Years of IM Computing. A Reborn Center for Interactive Management. Warfield joined the faculty of George Mason in 1984, and in doing so, found a home for the remainder of his career. He set to work immediately on the reconstruction of the Center for Interactive Management. His colleague Aleco Christakis joined him at George Mason. Others were brought on board, and the CIM evolved into a large and sophisticated functional team, as seen in this 1988 organizational chart. George Mason University Libraries.

30 Years of IM Computing. Early versions of ISM were written in computer languages like Fortran. Shown here are two pieces of ISM code, part of a much larger sequence of code written in 1979 at the University of Dayton. The top page is the code to print relationships for ISM statements, and the bottom page is the code to display questions to the participant group. George Mason University Libraries. 30 Years of IM Computing. Sigma-5: The Foundation of Interactive Management. The Interactive Management process was unique in conception, and carefully developed throughout the 1970's. What exactly is Interactive Management? Essentially, it is the use of technology and sophisticated problem solving techniques to clarify complex problems and their essential components. 30 Years of IM Computing. Soldier in the Classroom. The Foundations of a Career. The ASTP had been developed by the Army in 1942 to prepare and teach bright men valuable technical skills to support the war effort. By 1944, with draft and recruiting drives running short of replacement soldiers, the program had been reduced in size, but Warfield's intellect was compelling, and he was brought aboard. 30 Years of IM Computing. The Center for Interactive Management worked successfully with a number of public and private organizations throughout the 1980's. Located just outside of Washington D.C., the Center was ideally suited to network with important figures in the nation's government. But personal networking was not enough, during an era of rapid economic growth, and the growing use of technology to connect organizations. George Mason University Libraries. 30 Years of IM Computing. A New Direction - Computers. The design of computers in the 1950's was complex, and undertaken without the sophisticated design tools in existence today. Circuit diagrams were sketched by hand, and mathematics were performed without the assistance of handheld calculators. This diagram for a "Fast Memory Switch" is one of a long series of hand-drawn wiring diagrams used to construct PENNSTAC. This drawing was initialled and approved by Warfield in August 1955.

30 Years of IM Computing. First Patent: Electronic Goniometer. Second Patent: Digital Squelch System. Warfield's second approved patent was also originated while working for Wilcox Electronics. Filed in 1966, and approved in 1969, it was for a "Digital Squelch System." A third patent submitted by Warfield while at Wilcox, for "Improving the Spectral Purity of Transmitted Signals," was never approved. George Mason University Libraries.
