Notes on Sources | Pasco Phronesis

Muddling Through Science and Technology Policy. I’ll make notes here about sources in this blog and how they might affect your reading of it. Updates will either have a date in the text or as a parenthetical. There are two main categories of concern – stuff behind pay walls and broken links. If you note either on this blog that haven’t been mentioned in that post or on this page, holler (E-mail, comment, or site feedback). Has opted to make their news archive available to all. Good on them. Changes in go...

Nonstop Silliness | Cruel Mistress

Being Human on a Harsh Planet. Laquo; Red in Tooth and Claw. October 30, 2009. Levitt and Dubner apparently don’t back down. Here’s their article from Wednesday’s USA Today. I’m sure they’re selling a lot of books, but in doing so, they’re being disingenuous: acting one way and simultaneously decrying what they’re doing. The second set of scientists returned with a very different answer. Their solution cost less than one-thousandth as much to implement and did not require anyone to change his behavio...

Climategate Redux | Cruel Mistress

Being Human on a Harsh Planet. The future looks nasty. November 22, 2011. Brace yourselves… BBC has the scoop. Contents include more than 5,000 emails and other documents, some relating to work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). A similar release in 2009 triggered the “ClimateGate” affair and accusations of fraud that inquiries later dismissed. Now, as then, the release comes shortly before the annual UN climate summit. And kinda inappropriate, but if you’ve have some difficulty explaining Japan’s nuclear crisis to your five year old, here’s this fun video. (I’m only posting videos for the time being.). Oh, and there’s also this nuclear timeline. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:. On How to Avo...

Being Human on a Harsh Planet. Laquo; Climategate Redux. The future looks nasty. January 14, 2014. Our planet could warm by as much as 7.2 Fahrenheit degrees by the end of this century if nothing is done to stop or slow the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, according to a study published in the scientific journal Nature. Propagation of error, a standard of the physical sciences, is apparently foreign to climate modeling. It doesn’t exist in the published literature. Enter your comment here.

Being Human on a Harsh Planet. Laquo; Misreading the Point. Skydiving for the Earthbound. October 23, 2009. Keith Kloor kindly baits me with this thoughtful post. How can I resist a reply? The first step in understanding my position may come through somewhat more formal channels. I recently published an essay at Science Progress. That essay is primarily on ocean fertilization, though some of the arguments can be parlayed to geoengineering more generally. But that’s not all…. Sometimes advocates of policy...
