SSEC: GOES 9 Satellite discontinued

The GOES-9 satellite has been discontinued as of 11/14/05. GOES-9 was lent to JMA since the previous MTSAT satellite was lost/destroyed shortly after its launch in November 1999. Now that MTSAT-1R. Is operational it has taken over the scanning over the Pacific. GOES-9 has had known calibration issues, and is running out of fuel. Because of this and because MTSAT-1R is now operational, GOES-9 has been discontinued and is no longer providing data. Back to Real-Time Data.

Raindrops form when microscopic water droplets bump into each other in clouds. The more turbulent the clouds, the bigger the raindrops get. The process of combining cloud droplets through collision-coalescence is an important mechanism for forming precipitation in clouds composed solely of liquid water droplets.
