Gardening in the boroughs of nyc. Going Greener in 2012. Saturday, July 26, 2014. Frustrations of Urban Beekeeping Part 2. A few weeks ago, I wrote about how sometimes beekeeping in an urban environment can be very frustrating and disheartening. This past weekend, the frustrations continued. When we went to the first beehive location, we were shocked to see that there was yet again, another huge die off of bees. Has this ever happened to your hives? What did you do to combat this? Floral, sweet, deliciou...

Gardening in the boroughs of nyc. Going Greener in 2012. Tuesday, February 24, 2015. I received an email from my beehost yesterday and it was extremely bad news. This past Sunday, it went up to 47F degrees. And some of the bees ventured out of one of our beehives. But unfortunately, they were unaware that it's actually winter and snow on the ground. Thursday, February 5, 2015. More winter to come. A photo posted by Mimi (@meemsnyc). Feb 1, 2015 at 11:46pm PST. Tuesday, February 3, 2015. After the holiday...

Gardening in the boroughs of nyc. Going Greener in 2012. Wednesday, December 3, 2014. I've been pretty quiet on the blogging front. I have been so busy. I just returned from a trip to San Francisco. I saw some pretty amazing plants out there. I completely fell in love with the giant sedum plants that I saw everywhere! This one I saw on our visit to Alcatraz Island. A photo posted by Mimi (@meemsnyc) on. Nov 11, 2014 at 6:58am PST. These sedum plants were in front of our hotel. So pretty! Here is a close ...

Gardening in the boroughs of nyc. Going Greener in 2012. Monday, November 10, 2014. Winterizing and Wrapping the HIves. Two weeks ago, we closed up our hives for the winter. We consolidated all the honey frames into three boxes. Then we add a sugar feeder and add 7 pounds of granulated sugar in the box. I also added a frame feeder holder inside the box and poured sugar into the frame. A photo posted by Mimi (@meemsnyc). Oct 10, 2014 at 1:20pm PDT. A photo posted by Mimi (@meemsnyc). Gardening in the boroughs of nyc. Going Greener in 2012. Friday, October 22, 2010. Sweet Dill Pickle Recipe. Many of you have asked for my Sweet and Spicy Dill Pickle Recipe. I'm so sorry in the delay of posting. I actually had this in my draft folder and never hit "publish". Then the Frugal Gardener. Reminded me of it. This is the BEST pickle recipe I've ever had. Seriously good stuff! I like it so much, I use it for dilly beans too. I do an adaptation of the recipe that is found here. Optional) - 1 med...

gardening in the boroughs of nyc: Where's the Brood?
http://nycgardening.blogspot.com/2015/07/wheres-brood.html
Gardening in the boroughs of nyc. Going Greener in 2012. Thursday, July 16, 2015. So during this weekend's beekeeping session, I am completely bummed because I didn't see any brood in the hive. I'm fearing the worst, that either I injured the Queen at the last beekeeping inspection, or she may have swarmed. At the last inspection, I saw frame after frame of brood, so this is heartbreaking. A video posted by Mimi (@meemsnyc). Jul 15, 2015 at 3:27am PDT. A photo posted by Mimi (@meemsnyc). I can imagine yo...

Gardening in the boroughs of nyc. Going Greener in 2012. Monday, September 2, 2013. Making homemade hot sauce! At the farmer's market, they had these beautiful serranos, so I bought a pound and decided to make hot sauce for the first time ever! I've always wanted to make hot sauce, so this is going to be fun! In a saucepan, I put the following. 1/2 pound of serrano peppers, without seeds. 1 tablespoon of olive oil. 3 tablespoons of our own harvested Brooklyn honey. 3 tablespoons of water. How to make you...
