Holt & Heath Wooden Treenware: July 2015
http://holtheathwoodentreen.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, 9 July 2015. I've been wanting to have a go at turning some plates for ages, so when I recently got hold of a Birch log that was suitably big, I thought that it was about time to give it a try. I've been using these plates for all of my meals now and I'm definitely converted. There's something special about eating off of wood and you don't get the clanking and scraping noises that you get with regular plates. This first batch are going to be keepers, but i hope to have some for sale soon. The f...

Holt & Heath Wooden Treenware: Kuksa
http://holtheathwoodentreen.blogspot.com/2015/05/kuksa.html
Friday, 1 May 2015. I've tried four now. One of them was a complete failure so I took it off of the lathe and started carving it instead. I didn't get very far and then I gave it to Richard to finish. He may post it on here later. The first is the smallest one. It's ok, but it doesn't have the continuous curve from top to base that I am working towards. The second two are better, but I don't feel that I'm quite there yet as i had to do too much carving to get them right. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Holt & Heath Wooden Treenware: Naked Bowls
http://holtheathwoodentreen.blogspot.com/2015/03/naked-bowls.html
Friday, 6 March 2015. The problem is that I then got hooked on painting my bowls. I've had varying amounts of success with this. Some of them looked like they'd been hastily coloured in with a felt tip pen (Richard's words), but after a fair bit of experimentation, I feel pretty confident with my most recent ones. I particularly like the way that painted bowls, once worn a bit, show up the tool marks in the wood. This is also really nice with carved bowls. 6 March 2015 at 18:38. Very nice as is. Ive been...

Holt & Heath Wooden Treenware: Carving Day
http://holtheathwoodentreen.blogspot.com/2015/07/carving-day.html
Thursday, 9 July 2015. It was a nice sunny day; perfect for an afternoon carving. Unfortunately the piece of Maple that I was using was awful and very knotty. It probably should have been abandoned, but I persevered anyway. Richard spent some time trying out my Twca Cam and I had a go with his spoon board (I'll post more about them soon). Unfortunately, during the day, Richard managed to sit on the spoon he was copying and broke it. His copy will have to be his new favourite. 11 July 2015 at 12:00. These...

Holt & Heath Wooden Treenware: July 2014
http://holtheathwoodentreen.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 30 July 2014. I needed some method of displaying some of the spoons I'm going to be taking with me to the National Forest Wood Fair - I have quite a few now and I don't really just want to throw them down on a table some place. So I spent some time today making this:. Set at a bit of an angle so the spoons don't all come tumbling off and it wont fall over too easily. The legs are dowel and simply push into a predrilled whole. Tuesday, 29 July 2014. Svante Djarv Little Viking axe. If you compar...

Holt & Heath Wooden Treenware: October 2014
http://holtheathwoodentreen.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Monday, 20 October 2014. I'm a big fan of Birch bark boxes. I've made a few of them, but it's not always easy to get decent bark here in the UK. I probably need to try a bit harder. I bought the marvellous book by Vladimir Yarish. One of the great things about this object is that it's quite small and therefore doesn't require a lot of bark. So I decided to have a go at making one. If you click on the picture, you can just about make out the stamped decoration. More about the Pitt Rivers Museum later.

Holt & Heath Wooden Treenware: January 2015
http://holtheathwoodentreen.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, 31 January 2015. Looks like Richard and I are not the only ones with chairs on the mind at the moment. There have been some great posts about chairs recently on the Lost Art Press blog and also on Peter Follansbee's blog. Http:/ blog.lostartpress.com/2015/01/25/naked-necessity/. This post is kind.

Holt & Heath Wooden Treenware: August 2014
http://holtheathwoodentreen.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Friday, 29 August 2014. So, who is Holt and who is Heath? On Monday this week, Julian and I braved the British bank-holiday weather to attend the National Forest Wood Fair and took some of our wares along, to display and show other people and with the vague hope of selling one or two pieces. So, thank you to all those who bought something from us - it is the most flattering thing ever. All in all, a worthwhile activity and well worth getting soaked for. Sorry for all the pictures of spoons - I was kind o...
