The long winter - '69 Beetle

It has been a loooong time since I last updated the blog, but I have actually been active for the most of the winter, and most of the time has gone with test assembly in preparation for sandblasting, metallization and finally paint. I have created a short list of the most interesting things I have made over the winter:. 1 Modifications for “spar-käfer”-headliner. 2 Adding a new aircooled to the collection (a ’64 Vespa scooter). 3 Left rear fender. Reaching a milestone - '69 Beetle

Its a really big day for my ’69 beetle restoration project:. After about a year of preparation and careful work on all the small details I was able to send of the Beetle for another round of sandblasting in May. Now the chassis has got a metal coating and is back in the workshop in Kvinderup. This marks a turning point for the project as the days of tearing down is now over and the days of building up can begin – ohh happy day! Back in the workshop – sandblasted and metallized. "Drehzahlmesser" - '69 Beetle

The German word for a tachometer is “drehzahlmesser”, and that is exactly what I have decided to put in the ’69 beetle. To do that I have purchased a donor dashboard which I found on vwnettet.dk. I have used the metal from around the speedometer and welded it into the middle of my own dash. Finally I have closed the old holes from the original switches for light, windshield wipers, sprinkler, and emergency light since these are going to be flip switches placed below where the ashtray used to sit.

The headliner - '69 Beetle

When I sent the car for sandblasting the original headliner was removed – both to be able to sandblast the body properly, but also because it was worn. At some point I’ll therefore have to put a new headliner in. But Anders gave me an idea that I should consider a smaller on – the ones used in later cheaper models called the “Sparkäfer”. Example of a headliner for a “Sparkäfer”. Clips on the B-pillar. I’m leaning toward the small headliner – but I guess it is going to be demand some work.
