Research leads to innovative cancer treatment. Dr Tak Wah Mak. The Canadian Cancer Society funds research into many different types of cancer, including what is called basic research, which aims to better understand how cancer works in the body. How a breakthrough in one type of cancer is helping patients with other diseases. Drs Robert Noble and Charles Beer. Credit Irma Coucill and the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. The Canadian Cancer Society funded the work that led to the discovery of vinblastine by Dr Robert Noble and Dr Charles Beer in London, Ontario. Today, vinblastine is also used to treat other lymphomas, testicular cancers and Kaposi sarcoma, a type of cancer common in people with AIDS.

Enlisting cancer survivors to guide the future of research. As a prostate cancer survivor and Society volunteer, Bob Tuck, from North Bay, Ontario, has a unique perspective on the state of current diagnostic and treatment practices.
