A Balanced Dog

Thursday, June 7, 2012. Misinterpreting the Need for "Firm" Training. I've been thinking about something lately that I feel needs clearing up. It feels like I'm constantly reading about certain breeds needing a "firm" or "strict" trainer. It seems to me that while in a way this is true, using this terminology with your average dog owner (or aspiring dog owner) is an accident waiting to happen. Have any other ideas for how to change the way we talk about this personality trait in dogs? Your groomer sees y...

A Balanced Dog: On Choosing a Dog Breed

http://abalanceddog.blogspot.com/2010/11/on-choosing-dog-breed.html

Sunday, November 14, 2010. On Choosing a Dog Breed. All puppies are cute! But they are not all equal. The absolute best thing you can do for yourself if you're contemplating getting a dog is to critically think about your lifestyle, routine, experience, and what you feel you can handle. The following questions are meant to give you a starting point that you can work off of to figure out what breeds will meet your needs. Once you discover that, you can take more aesthetic things into account. What sort of...

A Balanced Dog: The Importance of Genetic Diversity

http://abalanceddog.blogspot.com/2010/11/importance-of-genetic-diversity.html

Monday, November 22, 2010. The Importance of Genetic Diversity. Virtually all cavaliers will be affected by Mitral Valve Disease. Despite the fact that the products of this outcross are dogs that are indistinguishable from purebred dalmations. Breeders are still fighting their recognition into the AKC. These dogs, and future outcrossing, would help save a breed that is on a downward slope into oblivion, but instead people fight and cling to a past that has failed the breed miserably. A balanced dog has a...

A Balanced Dog: Preparing Your Dog for the Groomer

http://abalanceddog.blogspot.com/2011/04/preparing-your-dog-for-groomer.html

Saturday, April 9, 2011. Preparing Your Dog for the Groomer. Your groomer sees your dog about once a month. Would your dog learn to sit if you only taught it and enforced it once every 30 days? No This is why you, as the dog's owner, are responsible for making sure he or she has a successful time at the groomer. I'll break down the grooming process for you, and give some training tips on what you can do at home to make the transition into grooming a successful one. Socialize, socialize, socialize. Yo...

Shiba Muffins: ALMOST there

http://foxandmuffin.blogspot.com/2010/10/almost-there.html

A girl and her dog. Tuesday, October 5, 2010. The Shiba Inu Rescue of Texas. Has been Incorporated by the State of Texas and just last night, Nicole and I finished up the paperwork to file for our 501(c)3 (nonprofit) after working on it off and on for the past few months. We just need the heads of the rescue to sign, write a check, and mail it to the Feds to get approved. You are awesome, Paula. Feel better, buddy. October 5, 2010 at 2:35 PM. Congrats and good work on that 501C3 Wooha!

Shiba Muffins: A tale of tails

http://foxandmuffin.blogspot.com/2011/04/tale-of-tails.html

A girl and her dog. Tuesday, April 5, 2011. A tale of tails. I apologize for the lack of updates. Between a lull of rescues and the amount of full and part-time jobs for Jeff and me equaling a whopping 5, there's not a lot of time left for things we want to do, like stay home with our dog. But we're working on it. In the meantime, I have been trying to take a picture of Koji every week for the 52 Weeks for Dogs group on flickr (and I've already missed one week! Tail is thick and powerful and is carried o...

Shiba Muffins: Zip, Zap and Sentaro vs Parvo

http://foxandmuffin.blogspot.com/2010/10/zip-zap-and-sentaro-vs-parvo.html

A girl and her dog. Saturday, October 16, 2010. Zip, Zap and Sentaro vs Parvo. Parvovirus, for those that aren't familiar, is a particularly nasty disease that has an 80% fatality rate and causes gastrointestinal tract damage as well as a few other things. In laymans terms, these poor dogs get the worst intestine destroying flu, to say the least. All three of them right now are fighting for their lives at two different vets, and we, the Shiba Inu Rescue of Texas. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Shiba Muffins: Prints for Relief

http://foxandmuffin.blogspot.com/2011/04/prints-for-relief.html

A girl and her dog. Tuesday, April 12, 2011. I've decided to sell prints to help more with Japan's relief effort. Even though it's been a month since their 9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami, Japan has still been getting aftershocks that are earthquakes in their own right, power outtages due to their offline power plants (Fukushima #1 still being dire), a shortage of supplies, and a continuing loss of property, home, and loved ones. You can look at available prints here; Prints for Relief.

A girl and her dog. Thursday, December 9, 2010. Rescue: Volunteers, Shelters, and the dreaded Armchair! A friend and fellow rescuer recently brought up a few rather good points about rescue. First off is her article about how you can help. And actually make a difference in rescue, as well as what is generally not recommended and regarded as the opposite of help. Shiba Muffins: Sad news

http://foxandmuffin.blogspot.com/2010/10/sad-news.html

A girl and her dog. Monday, October 18, 2010. Zip and Zap are recovering well and were able to go home to finish fighting off this illness. Unfortunately, Sentaro was getting septic and since the Parvo was proving to be too much for him, we at the rescue felt it to be the most humane to let him go this morning. We didn't get a chance to really know you yet, but you will be sorely missed and you were greatly loved, little buddy. Shiba Inu Rescue of Texas. Rest in peace Sentaro. October 19, 2010 at 12:31 AM.

A girl and her dog. Wednesday, September 8, 2010. FINALLY got some of these recipes to listen. I'll be a baking machine for the next few days to get all of these done for my winners (and I apologize for the delay! I promise they'll be worth it. Pictured left is a grain-free peanut butter and carob cookie that literally makes Koji drool. Those look so delicious! September 8, 2010 at 4:28 PM. Mmmm they look delish for people! What is A Balanced Equation? Crying on the elliptical. January 22, 2015.
