Abby Explores

Thursday, July 30, 2015. 8220;All good things must come to an end, but I wouldn’t have wanted it to end any other way or with any other people.”. Just about a month ago I left my site for the last time, and man, it was rough. I had been so busy thinking about and planning for my upcoming cross-country move that I had spent very little time dwelling on my looming departure or preparing for a going away party. Having heard numerous disappointing accounts of despedidas. And honestly, I was okay with that.

Abby Explores: July 2014

http://www.abbyexplores.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Saturday, July 26, 2014. While browsing one of the many artisan booths and the local fair last week I came across an adorably precious handmade doll. The soft doll was wearing a traditional Ngäbe nakwa. Was carrying a miniature chakara,. Had carefully handbeaded jewelry, and was even sporting a head full of hair made of a hand-dyed local plant fiber called pita. So much work went into this beautiful little creation that I was all too willing to shell out the requested $10 to make her mine. That’s w...

Abby Explores: If You Were to Visit My Village

http://www.abbyexplores.blogspot.com/2015/06/if-you-were-to-visit-my-village.html

Monday, June 29, 2015. If You Were to Visit My Village. If you were to visit my village, I’d tell you to bring a camera, your clothes, and a good pair of boots, but to please, please not get carried away with all of the newest gadgets and accessories a good outdoors store will make you feel like you need. Life here is simple, and no, you won’t get malaria, yellow fever, or rabies from visiting me in the jungle. We would pay $1 to ride the local chiva. Within a few hours though, my neighbors would hear th...

Monday, January 26, 2015. Chocolate Week, de nuevo! One of the things I most looked forward to during my training as a Peace Corps Volunteer was our cacao technical training- or, as I like to call it, Chocolate Week. Since generally even the most educated and experienced agriculture volunteers have little experience working with tropical Panamanian crops like cacao, we receive an additional week-long, in-depth training a few months after arriving to our sites. Grafting is a tricky technique that entails ...

Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Why My 10-Year-Old Self Would Love the Peace Corps. The other day as I was hiking back home, I had a thought: My 10 Year-Old self would love my job. Granted, she probably wouldn’t have been too fond of the lack of opportunities to dress up (Or be clean and nice looking in general), but overall I think she’d be pretty happy. Part of my job is to encourage people to make chocolate. Okay, even my current 23-year-old self is really happy about this one. We always had animals, b...

Abby Explores: November 2014

http://www.abbyexplores.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, November 9, 2014. The Life of Chocolate. November is here and that means some awesome things are happening in Panama: Independence days. Yes, plural) parades, random festivals, and most importantly. chocolate season. From pre-service training (PST) to chocolate week at in-service training to simply working with my neighbors in site, I've learned so much about chocolate this year and am excited to finally be blogging about it! The beans aren't brown- they're actually a deep purple until toasted.

The Closet Files: And I Thought the 30 for 30 was Hard...

http://theclosetfiles.blogspot.com/2013/06/and-i-thought-30-for-30-was-hard.html

And I Thought the 30 for 30 was Hard. Those of you who have followed this blog for awhile are familiar with the 30 for 30 Challenge. I did a while back. Essentially, you had to chose 30 items (shoes included) and wear only those 30 for 30 days. Additionally, the 30 day challenge came with a 30 day shopping ban. To say the least, It was an eye-opener about how much importance we put on our clothes- the quantity, the newness, the "look" that they give us and the way they make us feel. Labels: 30 for 30.

The Closet Files: A New Chapter

http://theclosetfiles.blogspot.com/2012/10/a-new-chapter.html

When I started blogging over two years ago, I had no idea how much I was getting myself into. I've grown to really love the community and the experience of blogging, but sadly, I also came to dread writing posts for The Closet Files. After a long hiatus, I realized that it was not that I disliked blogging, but that I was no longer passionate about what I was writing. Thank you to everyone who has commented, read, and supported me these past few years. I hope to see you on the other side! All images and p...

After I had finished reading this book, my sister asked me if it was good and if she should get it on tape so she could listen to it as she drove to Asheville. Without hesitation, I answered that it was very good, but that she should definitely. From → Uncategorized. February 7, 2010. From → Uncategorized.
