Texas Government blog

Tuesday, May 7, 2013. Shelly discusses the dispute over the Red River Compact between Oklahoma and Texas. She articulates how the dispute is over water resources that are in Oklahoma. Apparently, Texas wants to sue Oklahoma to get what they deem "excess" water from them. Overall, I think this is an informative post that presents some different perspectives on the Red River Compact. Friday, April 26, 2013. Texas' Social Services (Or lack thereof). Texas Government blog : February 2013

http://www.abbyintexas.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Why pay for empty beds in prisons? There are 111 prisons in Texas, and $123 million of our tax dollars are spent on leasing beds from private prison companies each year. As mentioned in this article. The editorial board at the Statesman takes a firm stance on this issue- claiming this $123 million "is money poorly spent that could be redirected elsewhere". They see the empty beds as an opportunity to close even more prisons and end contracts with private prison companies.

Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Sex Ed in Schools. That being said, the rate of teen pregnancy (both in Texas and in the US) has been steadily declining for the past two decades. Texas Government blog : Thoughts on the Texas "Shame" Act

http://www.abbyintexas.blogspot.com/2013/03/thoughts-on-texas-shame-act.html

Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Thoughts on the Texas "Shame" Act. On February 6, 2012, Texas passed something called a Sonogram Law. This law required that women who are getting an abortion are required to receive a sonogram and be shown the fetus they're about to abort 24 hours before the abortion. Also, they are required to listen to the heartbeat and a description of the fetus inside of them. KVUE recently featured an article. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Red White and Blue State. Texas Government blog : AISD to open single-sex schools

http://www.abbyintexas.blogspot.com/2013/02/aisd-to-open-single-sex-schools.html

Tuesday, February 5, 2013. AISD to open single-sex schools. On January 28, 2013, The Austin Chronicle. Apparently, there is evidence that shows that single-sex schools don't actually help people learn, and they typically reinforce gender stereotypes, as well as cause problems for transgendered people. Another issue is transportation for the students in those districts that don't want to attend a same-sex school. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Red White and Blue State. Government in the State of Texas: February 2013

http://abryantexas.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Government in the State of Texas. Thursday, February 21, 2013. Mental Health Blamed for Shootings. When I flew home to Germany over Christmas I had a layover at JFK. As I was walking through the airport I noticed a large group of people gathered around some TV’s. Nobody was talking, everybody was just staring at the screen. Misty's Dive Into Texas Government Blog: Blog Stage 6

http://texasstateandlocal.blogspot.com/2013/04/blog-stage-6.html

Misty's Dive Into Texas Government Blog. Monday, April 8, 2013. To our Gun-less Cowboys. I must agree, it seems a little less like Texas for us not to be able to wear our firearms at our sides. I had to really contemplate the multitude of consequences for and against the “open carry” option and I seem to be at an impasse. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Civic Cynic: March 2013

http://mattschickel.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

My blog for school; aka my Schlog. Thursday, March 28, 2013. State Rep. Paul Workman, Hard at Work. State Representative Paul Workman has now filed bills into the legislature weakening environmental protection. Environmental protection has long been a hallmark of Austin politics. Former Mayor Gus Garcia once called Austin "a city within a park". Workman's bills will create a statewide, state-backed deregulation that should really be left to cities and their governances. One question I have after reading ...

Eyes of Texas Blog: May 2013

http://eotexas.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Eyes of Texas Blog. Friday, May 10, 2013. Fracking and Its Consequences (Stage 8). Forest at Longhorn Politics. Brings up the issue of "fracking" which has become a crucial topic lately. What is it and why has it become such a big deal recently? With the New York Times claiming that the "United States is on track to overtake Saudi Arabia as the world's largest oil producer as early as 2017," it is clear that fracking isn't going away anytime soon. Longhorn Politics: Abusing the System

http://longhornpolitic.blogspot.com/2013/04/abusing-system.html

Sunday, April 7, 2013. The idea that many welfare recipients are abusing the system is more of a stereotype than an actual problem. Of course there are people out there that abuse the system, but implementing drug testing as part of the solution isn't going to fix the problem—it’s only going to cost the tax payers more money. Doug’s post on "No more Free rides". That leaves welfare recipients. Would drug testing people who receive aid in Texas result in lowering the cost of welfare programs? Those who re...

Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Abusing the System Part 2. This is a revision of my Blog 6 post, or my Blog 6 part two. I’ve tried to post this in the comments section, but apparently it’s too long. This is my rebuttal to Doug Warzon's post "Now or Later". Furthermore, the 13 million over a five-year period is questionable, and based on the numbers that Florida has received, extremely inflated. Lets talk about Florida for a minute since Doug uses it in his argument. This is a perfect example of why drug testin...

Love and Tolerance in Texas: Texas Politicians for "Ag-Gag" Laws?

http://kelleyjura.blogspot.com/2013/04/in-commentary-on-eyes-of-texas-blog-mr.html

Love and Tolerance in Texas. Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Texas Politicians for "Ag-Gag" Laws? In a commentary on the Eyes of Texas. The blog author also mentions the public health issues of E. coli and salmonella but fails to mention the ammonia and hydrogen sulfide that comes from the 280 billion pounds of manure each year. The improper storage and disposal is a serious threat to air and water quality. Texas does little to enforce environmental standards on these CATO's. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
