A Bird's Eye View of Housing. June 19, 2015. June 19, 2015. And if the popularity of Benefit Street and other such programmes is anything to go by, there isn’t much public support out there for our cause. You may recall that I made the final three of the CIH Rising Stars competiton last year, but you may not know this was actually the second time I had entered the competition. At the start of this post I mentioned the topic of the very first Rising Stars competition; here is my entry from 2011:. Whilst s...

A Bird's Eye View of Housing. February 21, 2015. February 21, 2015. As I’ve been a bit lax on the blogging front recently (this final quarter seems to be super busy! I though I’d share a few of the things I’ve been pondering over lately:. Ladies old enough to be my grandma were up later than I was playing bingo on trestle tables on a side street! A stark contrast to the bingo sessions I’ve seen in my organisation’s community centres! 2 I enjoyed Alistair McIntosh’s article. It seems we have a lot of lead...

A Bird's Eye View of Housing. Shooting for the stars. March 15, 2015. March 15, 2015. With just a few days left until the deadline to enter this year’s CIH and Inside Housing Rising Stars competition, I thought I’d share my experience of being a finalist in last year’s competition. The only problem with this approach was that my response didn’t exactly answer the question so I was taking the risk of making life hard for myself in the next stages of the competition should I get through.

A Bird's Eye View of Housing. 4102; looking back on the year. December 30, 2014. December 30, 2014. No it’s not Usher’s latest album, this is my reflection on the achievements and challenges that 2014 brought (apologies in advance, it’s quite long, but hopefully quite interesting also :) ). Starting with the day job, I’m really pleased with how far the Private Sector Leasing. Many of the properties had been empty for 4 or 5 years; now they provide affordable housing (see one tenant’s story. It has been f...

A Bird's Eye View of Housing. Make the most of membership. May 30, 2016. Like many membership organisations that don’t benefit from mandatory membership (like RIBA or RICS), member numbers have fallen in recent years and it is a much debated topic about how we CIH board members can tackle this. Unsurprisingly, it was a session topic at ONE CIH and I made sure I attended the discussion in the hope of finally tackling this problem. Board membership has also given me some fantastic opportunities that I woul...

A Bird's Eye View of Housing
A Bird's Eye View of Housing. Day two was where I came in. I’m a member of my organisation’s Creativity Club which uses creative problem solving skills to solve problems for others in the organisation. We spent an afternoon using three of these techniques: boundary examination, reversal and super heroes and this blog is a little record of what the young people cam e up with them. And this is what hey come up with during the exercise:. Should the housing crisis be fixed. A house costs a gazillion pounds.
