October 15, 2016. October 15, 2016. It’s the first thing they say to you when you arrive. Yeah, it sounds kind of creepy and I knew in advance that this would be the greeting, but in context and after a rather arduous four days getting there, I received it as a warm and comforting greeting. The hug helped. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you have never been to Burning Man. In spite of the dirt and the difficulty of just getting there, I found the experience to be singularly astonishing. The Spl...

Not ideology. Teleology. October 17, 2016. October 3, 2016. This post was inspired by Nietzsche’s Revenge. Here is a condensed summary of Haque’s points:. There are three things that characterize America. . . First, brutalism. An unmitigated disregard for human life . . . S]econd . . . cruelty is seen as virtuous. Third, power as the end of human life. In America, whether in a church pew or at a bank, a life is worth. What it can consume. Used to run Wells Fargo surely believes that he is an. The brutali...

Is this the end of the Lesser of Two Evils argument? | Being Toward Death

Is this the end of the Lesser of Two Evils argument? May 4, 2016. It’s a great time to start talking to your relatives and friends about the fallacious argument referenced above that we are subjected to on a quadrennial basis. It is a mind boggling event worthy of the Situationists. It is a glorious black swan. That will destroy the American political system. It is divine justice from the Almighty who is raising up the Bad King/Queen we deserve. Has Academic Philosophy Outlived its Usefulness? You are co...

The Utility of Formalism | Being Toward Death
https://beingtowarddeath.wordpress.com/2016/05/24/the-utility-of-formalism
The Utility of Formalism. May 24, 2016. A few weeks ago I had an opportunity to attend a Japanese flower arrangement class. The art form has flourished in Japan since the 6th century where it was introduced or invented by Buddhist monks. Has many schools, but all of them rely on a formalist framework. Forms are defined and rigidly adhered to. Even “free form” arrangements are mash ups of accepted forms. As a young artist, my idea of formalism had more to do with tradition than theory. I had never hea...

Being Toward Death | Dealing With Philosophy | Page 2

Has Academic Philosophy Outlived its Usefulness? May 2, 2016. The recently (and unjustly) un-tenured Crispin Sartwell questions whether the current crop of philosophers is up to snuff. That all sounds about right. And given the above, maybe people who would otherwise have chosen to focus on philosophy “thought better of it” (as the guys at Partially Examined Life. Say in their podcasts) and chose a different career. Maybe after suffering through two or three years studying the history of philosophy t...

there is no “I” there | Being Toward Death

There is no “I” there. October 14, 2016. I find this interesting because there is a great deal of utility in this faculty of the mind. It is the basis of empathy, for example. That we can imagine being “in someone else’s shoes” helps us to connect and exist as social creatures. It’s odd that this ability is based on a deep fallacy. The Utility of Formalism. Welcome Home →.
