Focusing Rails | Macro Photography

A Resource on Macro Photography. Focus rails basically come in two varieties, a single axis rail like the one pictured here, and a two axis variety that allows for left to right movement as well as forward and back. A lot of manufactures make focusing rails already equipped with quick release plates (like the one pictured here) that are compatible with the various quick release systems out there such as the Really Right Stuff, and Arca-Swiss. A Resource on Macro Photography. While most macro lenses double as a great general purpose lens the Canon MP-E 65mm is completely useless in any other role than that of a macro lens. But wow, what a macro lens it is! It starts out at 1x magnification and extends out to 5x magnification. With this lens you can leave those bellows, reverse mounting adapters and extension tubes behind and take this lens into the field all by itself. Continue with Tripods and Supports. A Resource on Macro Photography. Close-up lenses measure their power in diopters with the formula. Hence Canon's 250D and 500D are 4 and 2. You can easily see why 50mm and shorter lenses are a favorite for this technique. Magnification of Stacked Lenses. A problem you can run into with stacked lenses is vignetting, or the darkening of the corners of the frame. This is why it is always a good idea to use a fast lens, like a 50mm f/1.8 as your reversed lens. Continue with next section: Reversing Lenses.
