Summer Garage Luthier: March 2013
http://summergarageluthier.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, March 2, 2013. Worst nut ever, hot glue pot construction, and more. Okay, I'm covering several days of material with this post, so bear with me. About three weeks ago, I had the time to finally start dissecting that Kamaka Pineapple Uke. To review, that nut is so ugly that it hurts my feelings. I made a pretty fair size slot, and kept at it until I could crush the thing. Oh words fail me. That appears to be a toothpick used as a shim. This is just horrible. I mean, what are those slots for?

Summer Garage Luthier: February 2013
http://summergarageluthier.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, February 14, 2013. Complete Nunes, lots of mistakes. This has been a fairly discouraging series of repairs. First, about two weeks ago, I finally attached the bridge to the Nunes ukulele. I needed some kind of caul to back up the bridge on the Nunes. I used a forstner bit to make holes in the ends of a piece of scrap wood. I then hot-glued some magnets in the holes. I used the magnets to position and hold the caul, and put on a strip of wood to help with placing the bridge. Not bad at all.

Summer Garage Luthier: November 2013

Saturday, November 30, 2013. Sorry for the layoff. Ya know, I got busy, summer ended, the school year started, and I did little random repairs that didn't seem worth blogging about. I have done a fair amount of work to the Cuatro, and I'm now fabricating sides for it. My first task today was to wire up a Variac that I had gotten about 20 years ago at a flea market sale. I needed to be able to control the temperature of my bending pipe, and this worked perfectly! Cuatro, Variac, and bending pipe. After so...

Summer Garage Luthier: April 2015

Friday, April 3, 2015. Small Kamaka and Guild work. Okay, I got a little bit of work done yesterday. Mostly, I cleaned the garage, made a new sanding board, played electric guitar for the first time in ages, and did a little work on the Kamaka and the Guild. Carve, sand and carve some more, then level the thing with the current fretboard. From the back, all looks well. This uke, like most Kamaka ukes of this period, is remarkably asymmetrical, I assume the neck was quickly formed on a belt sander. It's r...

Sunday, November 25, 2012. Binding replacement on the Nunes. This is another picky repair. Replacing the missing binding is not hard, just time consuming and fussy. This is the problem. 1.25 inches of missing binding. Eight chunks are missing. I cut apart some maple and - whatever this dark wood is. It was a close match for color, and that was all I cared about. Truing up the maple thickness. Not bad. Super glue, and accelerant. Did I say I needed eight pieces? Slathered up with glue and ready to put in&...

Summer Garage Luthier: May 2015

Sunday, May 31, 2015. Back to the Cromwell, and a few other tidbits. So, a couple months ago we made a spruce patch for a dig in the top of the Cromwell. We carved out a small bowl shape, supported the heck out of the underside of the top, then pressed a wet piece of spruce wood into the hole with a LOT of pressure. Later on, and completely undocumented, we unclamped the thing, and glued that press-fit and now dry piece of spruce into the hole. Last week, it was chisel time. This is the final product.

Summer Garage Luthier: January 2013
http://summergarageluthier.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, January 26, 2013. Getting closer on the Nunes. Got some good work today, and I felt good that I simplified my approach to some nagging problems. First, I started in with a bit of work on the Cuatro. Removing tuners was fairly easy. I'm not sure how I failed to notice that one screw had been replaced with a tack. Little cracks on one side. And a pretty nasty crack on the other side, which had been reglued once. I decided to just wick in CA glue and clamp. Well, that was pretty simple. I also wor...

Summer Garage Luthier: March 2015

Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Kamaka Uke, sanding blocks, and filling in missing wood. So, the last thing I posted before was about sanding blocks. Here we go. Speaking of the Kamaka, here is my first idea. The sides are now flat diagonals, and I have put in some koa in the deep part of the slot. Really ugly from the side, there is some significant wood loss here. I started trimming a new piece to fit in. This is an early shot, I got it to fit quite well. It's a tough fit, though. This is that hole. There was...

Summer Garage Luthier: Opening the top on a Kamaka uke
http://summergarageluthier.blogspot.com/2015/06/opening-top-on-kamaka-ukeafter.html
Monday, June 8, 2015. Opening the top on a Kamaka uke. Today was a hot day, 104 degrees in the forecast. This is great if I need to use heat on an instrument, but not great for me. I already fixed the back, by running a credit card with sandpaper on it through the rack, reducing the tailblock to the correct size. Now for the front, which is better attached, has a big crack in the top, and nothing is moving. That little gap at the top is what I'm working on. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
