A blog about the joys and challenges of being an adoptive family. A blog about the joys and challenges of being an adoptive family. Stories to support and hopefully to bring a smile. Cuckoo in the Nest? January 13, 2017. What does it mean to belong? Fast forward several months or years then to when an adopted child is placed with their new forever family. Now what does it mean to belong? What does it mean to belong to a family that doesn’t look like you, sound like you or smell like you? Being available ...

A blog about the joys and challenges of being an adoptive family. April 14, 2016. I have been thinking this week about the topics of loss. For our adopted children. We are the sum of all our experiences. Both good and bad. Our likes and dislikes, routines, significant relationships and geography. Shape who we are. Children who have had multiple moves in their life from birth family to foster care placements and on to their forever family may have had to cope with. Formed with different genetics to my own.

A blog about the joys and challenges of being an adoptive family. April 5, 2016. April 5, 2016. We were of course bringing our son home…only. It wasn’t home to him. Home was over 200 miles away in a brick-built house on a busy road close to all the excitement that London has to offer. Our home is a stone cottage in a quiet town on the edge of the Derbyshire Dales. So how did we go about making our world his world? Making his old life still part of his new life. Routine, routine and more routine. As soon ...

A blog about the joys and challenges of being an adoptive family. The Law of The Jungle. April 25, 2016. April 26, 2016. I have been asked to help out at an Adopters’ Support Group tomorrow focusing on how to manage challenging behaviours in our children and it got me thinking…. Who decides how we should behave? Who makes up the rules? Who gets to say what is acceptable behaviour or not? Who created the law of The Jungle? The little one who is so hyper vigilant in class that they struggle to listen to an...

A blog about the joys and challenges of being an adoptive family. May 21, 2016. May 22, 2016. There’s a weightiness. To being an adoptive family. I don’t know if you can identify with that. Firstly there’s the weight of our child’s past. Most children removed from their birth family come from a background of neglect and/or trauma.Their past experiences have left a mark and this can weigh heavy on them. And on us as parents. As if living in a goldfish bowl. To relax and enjoy the family we so longed for!

It’s been an interesting experience, committing to daily blogging. Anyway, back to blogging: in summary the daily blogging has at times been a struggle for all sorts of reasons. Embarking alone on an adoption adventure in the UK. Author Archives: Pedalling Solo. I am a potential adopter in the UK, going it alone as they say. Somehow I've worked my way through lots of paperwork, done lots of learning, become an approved adopter, and navigated matching (hopefully). I am very much learning as I go. This blog is my opportunity to share my learning and experiences and maybe some random musings as I go along as well. Books and chat: what more could we want? One is encouraged, as a pro...

Embarking alone on an adoption adventure in the UK. 8220;Before I Arrive”. I am so very lucky. →. 8220;Every little thing is gonna be alright …”. The last few days have been challenging. I’ve kept on smiling, ridden the roller coaster, going with the flow. There has been some really good stuff going on – but mixed in with some pretty low moments too. And everything’s gonna be alright? Sometimes it’s the little things in life that make the difference. Because you know what? I am a potential adopter in the...

Embarking alone on an adoption adventure in the UK. Tales of assessment: all about Stage 2. Blogger navel-gazing: brevity or stories as they come? Navigating my first Exchange Day. 8220;Keep going you reckon? 8220;I think so, yep … oh here, here”. My mother, driving, pulls in to an unfamiliar car park. She pauses and we look around trying to work out what next. 8220;Shall we go a bit further? We thread our way through the main car park and on down past what looks like a sports hall. Embarking alone on an adoption adventure in the UK. 8220;Every little thing is gonna be alright …”. Testing out the hidden joys of the countryside →. I am so very lucky. Earlier this week an acquaintance who I know locally was at the same meeting as me. A little group of us were stacking chairs and collecting bags and coats afterwards, and a couple asked me – as people are prone to doing at the moment – how my adoption stuff is going. I do know these can be very important, and if they proved to work ok c...

Saturday, August 30, 2008. We are cautiously optimistic and 100% in prayer for a birthmom out of state who has chosen us to parent a baby girl due in October! We have loved each phone call and email we've shared with a woman who is QUITE SOMETHING and are wildly trying to come up with a plan of attack as we happily tip our apple cart right over. L'il Squirt has a heart condition known as complete AVSD. And we're learning SO about cardiovascula. Thursday, August 21, 2008. On the plus side, I've started wr...

adoptingeachother – a blog about the joys and challenges of being an adoptive family
A blog about the joys and challenges of being an adoptive family. Cuckoo in the Nest? January 13, 2017. What does it mean to belong? As a baby its first attachment or bond is to its birth parent or parents. The baby depends on this caregiver for life itself as well as a developing awareness of self. To belong to another defines us, helps us to grow and creates a secure base from which to live life. What does it mean to belong to a family that doesn’t look like you, sound like you or smell like you? Being...
