http://wisconsinyankeeinkingdavidscourt.blogspot.com/2008/04/this-year-in-jerusalem-or-at-least-in.html
A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court. Monday, April 21, 2008. This Year in Jerusalem (or at Least in Israel). The great theoretician of Zionist Marxism, but he scoffed with a wave of his hand, saying Borochov was the theoretician of the Poalei Zion ("Workers of Zion"), Ben-Gurion. In 1978 and signed the famous " Officers' Letter. To Menachem Begin. Left-wing politics runs like a thread through the whole family. All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and utterly fascinating experience for me. From ...

A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court: Two Concepts of Liberty in Hebrew
http://wisconsinyankeeinkingdavidscourt.blogspot.com/2007/12/two-concepts-of-liberty-in-hebrew.html
A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court. Tuesday, December 11, 2007. Two Concepts of Liberty in Hebrew. I learned something interesting from a recent issue of The Forward. That venerable weekly founded more than a century ago by Jewish socialists in New York City. The newspaper’s regular column “On Language” related the following story. The Hebrew word for liberty]. We are servants of God.”. This would be all very well and good if only the Statue of Liberty were known in Hebrew as pesel ha-hofesh. 8216;...

A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court: Farewell to Jerusalem
http://wisconsinyankeeinkingdavidscourt.blogspot.com/2008/07/farewell-to-jerusalem.html
A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court. Tuesday, July 29, 2008. I went to Mount Herzl, above all, to visit Theodor Herzl. 8217;s tomb and to pay my respects to the great visionary who, by his own admission, laid the foundations for the Jewish state in 1897. “If you will it,” he taught Jews around the world, “it is no dream.” By chance, our visit coincided with the yahrzeit. As if this wasn’t impressive enough – dayenu. 8211; he turned out to be a real mensch. Another book about Spinoza? And, if he sees...

A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court: Masada and the Dead Sea
http://wisconsinyankeeinkingdavidscourt.blogspot.com/2008/07/masada-and-dead-sea.html
A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court. Saturday, July 19, 2008. Masada and the Dead Sea. Instead. Although Masada was visited by an American missionary in 1842, members of an American naval expedition in 1848, and Charles Warren (the same one who discovered Warren's Shaft. In 1867, Mark Twain did not go and seems not to have been aware of it. Here is a photo of the Northern Palace at Masada, built by Herod on three rock terraces. In the distance you can see the Dead Sea. יָם הַ מלך. Sea of the King")&...

A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court: Past and Present
http://wisconsinyankeeinkingdavidscourt.blogspot.com/2008/01/past-and-present.html
A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court. Monday, January 21, 2008. Last Thursday I took the bus to Tel Aviv University to register for a 4-week ulpan (language training), which is a good thing, because I'm starting to feel like a damn fool repeating "Atah medeber anglit? And "Ani lo medeber ivrit" to everyone. The ulpan started on Sunday and, like Mark Twain in The Innocents Abroad. We are getting foreignized rapidly and with facility.". Lo, Florida.". Ah, Miami," he said knowingly. These experiences go...

A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court: En Gedi
http://wisconsinyankeeinkingdavidscourt.blogspot.com/2008/07/en-gedi.html
A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court. Saturday, July 26, 2008. On July 24, A. and I embarked on our final road trip in Israel: an excursion to En Gedi, an oasis located on the eastern edge of the Judean Desert and the western shore of the Dead Sea. Today En Gedi is the site of a kibbutz (collective farm) and a nature reserve. A. and I hiked through the nature reserve and swam in the streams and pools fed by the natural springs. Now, as in the past, human beings share the oasis with desert wildlife.

A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court: News Round-Up
http://wisconsinyankeeinkingdavidscourt.blogspot.com/2008/07/news-round-up.html
A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court. Thursday, July 31, 2008. 1 At the end of 2007, shortly before my arrival in Israel, Haaretz. That the Israeli military had become much better at minimizing civilian casualties during aerial attacks on Palestinian terrorists in Gaza. "The rate of civilians hurt in these attacks in 2007 was 2-3 percent. The IDF has come a long way since the dark days of 2002-2003, when half the casualties in air assaults on the Gaza Strip were innocent bystanders. 2 In May,. Which ...

A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court: Postscript
http://wisconsinyankeeinkingdavidscourt.blogspot.com/2008/08/postscript.html
A Wisconsin Yankee in King David's Court. Thursday, August 21, 2008. To pass the time on the long flight back to the States, broken up by an overnight stay in London, I read one of the last remaining things on my spring reading list: Bernard-Henri Lévy’s American Vertigo. Cleverly subtitled Traveling America in the Footsteps of Tocqueville. It seemed appropriate. After all, I began this travelogue with a discussion of Tocqueville. There are, Lévy suggests, at least three reasons for the European’s ...
