No Good Deed Goes Unpunished | knapsackstrats
https://knapsackstrats.wordpress.com/2016/06/17/no-good-deed-goes-unpunished
How do you know? No Good Deed Goes Unpunished. June 17, 2016. So, my middle child graduated from high school 2 weeks ago. I want to say that it was a joyous occasion. I want to say I was relieved and bursting with pride. I was those things, but only to a degree. Don’t you just hate when a good deed produces negative unintended consequences? You know. No good deed goes unpunished. So from where my husband and I sat during the ceremony, MC was way out of line, not in the right place. As our last name g...

Eddie, Sweet Eddie | knapsackstrats
https://knapsackstrats.wordpress.com/2016/03/10/eddie-sweet-eddie
How do you know? Eddie, Sweet Eddie. March 10, 2016. March 10, 2016. I had the honor of connecting with one of my former students earlier this week. Eddie is a Junior now. I was his teacher for 1st-4th grades. Eddie was my favorite. Always will be. Oh, I love all my students. I really do. But Eddie reached in and grabbed my heart in a powerful way. Eddie worked on Aunt Sally. I caught a lot of flack for the way I supported Eddie in school. There were many that wanted me to extract a pound of flesh ea...

Question of the day. WHY? | knapsackstrats
https://knapsackstrats.wordpress.com/2016/04/13/question-of-the-day-why
How do you know? Question of the day. WHY? April 13, 2016. Now consider how often we assume the student is attention seeking. How in the world do we know with certainty that a student is doing something just for attention? And, why do we assume seeking attention is a negative thing? Or how about ‘refused to do his work’. Do we know for sure the student is refusing? How about the student can’t do the work? It looks like won’t, but the truth is she student can’t. What does that mean? How do we really know?

The Best Collaboration Ever, Part 2 | knapsackstrats
https://knapsackstrats.wordpress.com/2015/07/14/the-best-collaboration-ever-part-2
How do you know? The Best Collaboration Ever, Part 2. July 14, 2015. October 16, 2015. Wildabest and I believe we rescued Aunt Sally. She was sitting on the enclosed porch of a store all about weaving that was run by a really, really cranky and impatient lady. When we pulled up and saw that loom in all of her glory we were instantly in love. And I mean that. We fell in love. Wildabest and I felt deep down in a primal way the healing power of Aunt Sally. And there she was. She changed the way the enti...

And This Is What Happens | knapsackstrats
https://knapsackstrats.wordpress.com/2016/03/02/and-this-is-what-happens
How do you know? And This Is What Happens. March 2, 2016. March 2, 2016. I have worked with hundreds of kids. I have seen the ill-effects of behaviorism flourish in far too many ways. One of my pet peeves has always been this. 8216;When you get done with this, then you can do that’. 8216;Finish your work and you can have free time.’. 8216;When you are done with this assignment you can have free time’. Well, guess what? So, how do we motivate students to get to the task at hand? This doesn’t have to...

And Yes, I will Say It Again | knapsackstrats

How do you know? And Yes, I will Say It Again. February 25, 2016. Behavior Modification = Manipulation No Matter How You Wrap It. No I am not through presenting my argument against the overuse, the misuse, and abuse of behaviorism in our schools. We really must continue this crusade to reform how we. He needs to stop all this annoying talking out/defiance/out of his seat/pencil breaking/refusal to work/poking others/avoidance behaviors/you fill in the blank”. Yeah, right. Right? Let’s say you are w...

Ready for the New World. Education for a bright, new future. Speaking from Experience: A Series. February 23, 2015. March 5, 2015. Data-driven decision making has been all the rage in education for the past few decades, but, as Larry Cuban points out here. But, they lament, it’s hard to find classroom teachers doing more than complaining, making excuses, or following self-interest. There are some writers, like David Greene. In this series, I will share observations about the general trends I’ve see...

Embracing a Buzzword: Personalized Learning – Ready for the New World
https://readyforthenewworld.wordpress.com/2015/06/30/embracing-a-buzzword-personalized-learning
Ready for the New World. Education for a bright, new future. Embracing a Buzzword: Personalized Learning. June 30, 2015. July 24, 2015. It’s in my nature to bristle at slogans and buzzwords. I’ve taught long enough to know that buzzwords are easy to toss around, much harder to understand, and nearly impossible to transform into effective change. So when I first heard the term “personalized learning”, I questioned it. Does it mean we cater to the whims of every child? Focus on the development of relations...
