Fall Crafts and Projects. Winter Crafts and Projects. Currently viewing the category: "Baking". Perfect Italian style biscotti with dark chocolate. May 30, 2015. Middot; In Baking. As you can imagine living on a farm, even a small one like this requires a pretty strict routine. When I am even slightly pushed out of my routine I get (a little) cranky. Now, I would not admit this to my husband because frankly he is the biggest source of distraction in my life. [.]. February 12, 2015. Middot; In Baking.

Fall Crafts and Projects. Winter Crafts and Projects. Currently viewing the category: "Fermenting". Three cultures and a stampede. March 10, 2014. Middot; In Fermenting. Last we spoke I was lamenting about all my cultures dying on the way here from Florida. In the few months I’ve been without cultured and or fermented food I have to tell you I can feel the difference in my tummy. I’m absolutely serious. I know how ridiculous I sound but I am telling [.]. February 11, 2014. Middot; In Fermenting. I, as so...

Our New Hive. Or What Might Have Been. 10 Tips On Siting A New Beehive →. We Thought It Was A Goner, But The Hive Came Back, The Very Next Day. May 18, 2012. As If That. Just. Happened. Oh my gosh. I had the most unbelievable moment yesterday, I’m still in awe at the thought of it. If you recall, I suffered a bit of a hit on Sunday when my beehive swarmed. And half of them flew away just hours before I was to split them and put them in my brand new Top-Bar Hive. Oh yeah, baby! That’s my swarm! This time ...

Little Farm in the Big City: Re-Growing Celery

http://www.littlefarminthebigcity.com/2012/01/re-growing-celery.html

Little Farm in the Big City. Welcome to the Farm! Friday, January 27, 2012. A couple of weeks ago, a dear friend Jackie shared an interesting link. On Facebook about re-growing celery from the bottom of the stalk. I’d heard of this before but never tried it. Well, Jackie threw that challenge out, so I had to try. This is just about the coolest gardening trick ever! You can imagine my delight when I learned that I can grow celery in a fraction of the time! Less time also means less water! The plants have ...

Ivy Hill Farm: November 2012

http://ivyhillfarm.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 19, 2012. So, it's been WAY too long since I've updated the blog! A LOT has changed since June! It turned out that Phineas and Ferb were both drakes, and Candace and Stacy turned out to be Candace and Steve! So, we traded Phineas and Ferb for 2 female Pekin from a local guy. He said they were both female, so we named them Zoe and Midna. It turns out that Midna is a drake as well! All of our chickens are doing really well! Robbie is our only rooster, thank goodness! Yes, I know it's a lit...

Ivy Hill Farm: Homemade Laundry Soap

http://ivyhillfarm.blogspot.com/2012/04/homemade-laundry-soap.html

Monday, April 23, 2012. For the past 6 months or so, I have been making my own laundry soap. It works FANTASTIC! It smells wonderful, it cleans beautifully, and it is significantly less expensive. (Just what we all like to hear, right? You will need Borax, Washing Soda, Fels Naptha (or Zote, Ivory, or your favorite bar), and a cheese grater. (The oxy cleaner is optional). 1 cup of Washing Soda (not baking soda). Put half the soap in the processor or blender and the powder and blend. Gotta be inventive so...

Little Farm in the Big City: Soapmaking Resource Review

http://www.littlefarminthebigcity.com/2012/04/soapmaking-resource-review.html

Little Farm in the Big City. Welcome to the Farm! Friday, April 27, 2012. I’ve learned a lot since then. In fact, not only does my family have a good supply of plain soap on hand, I’m working on some specialty bars like lavender soap and chamomile shampoo bars. Good resources made a big difference! Aside from the excellent visuals and recipes, the book also provides detailed instructions for building soap molds and a soap cutter. Yep, this would be my first pick for the beginner soapmaker. This DVD is a ...

Wild Ramps The New 19th Century Kitchen

http://www.new19thcenturykitchen.com/wild-ramps

While I’ve been reading and hearing about ramps, until last year, I had never tried them or even seen them. More than once I saw an empty basket labeled ramps at the farmers market. Apparently, I wasn’t getting up early enough. They were a mystical thing to me. Ramps have green leaves, with purplish stems and white bulbs. The bottom looks like a scallion bulb and the top is a broad, floppy leaf. The whole plant is edible. On our hunt, we were in no danger of decimating the crop. We pulled various ram...
