Monday, November 3. Kristen: on the road, again. Around 3 pm, we arrived at the camp. it was much larger than i anticipated. our tents were already set up, complete with mattresses, towels, basins and a chair. we spent the rest of the day learning about camp life. From the tropical coastlines and desolate interior to the Sahara Dessert in western Africa, I witness missionaries surviving in the roughest conditions share the love of Christ through humanitarian aide, friendship and evangelism. I worked for two and a half years in multi-media communications. In fall of 2008, I moved to East Africa. Will the cultural things I learned in West Africa carry over?

Friday, November 7. Jesse: Medicine and the spirit world. The room is dark. A small table with a white cloth laid over it is placed in the middle of the room. On the far wall and the wall on the left, the men sit on benches and chairs. The women are crowded on the floor next to the wall. But when he spoke and talked about his word that is when it became evident that he was a witch doctor. He spoke of controlling good and evil spirits, looking into a mirror to find murderer and praying to Jesus to heal.

Tuesday, January 1. More often than not, i see the world through a lens. I am a (photo)journalist living in kenya. before i moved to africa, i lived in memphis, planting gardens, drawing with sidewalk chalk and hanging out with neighborhood kids. (to pay the bills, i took pictures for the newspaper.). I’m addicted to coffee, and to the company of people who are alive. Sunday, November 9. Jesse: Church in Petauke. How confused is the spiritual landscape? Sweating, cramped, sitting on the cement pews of the Reformed Church of Zambia, I wondered how the others were doing. The 40/40 group split up and attended 14 different types of churches in the town of Petauke. I think the church Sarah and I attended was more toward the Presbyterian persuasion. Tuesday, June 2, 2009. After spending the first part of 4040 in Lusaka we then travel to Petauke for bush camp. The kids still do school and have field trips during this phase as well. Most kids enjoy this part the best because there is so much room to run and play and most kids like to camp anyway. Being around the fire at night and telling stories was especially fun. Tiger the camp dog. Bambo Apton Mwanza taught us how to make a fire. Rya with her nanny, Nellia. Nathan with his nanny, Jane.

Friday, June 5, 2009. We go to school during the week while our parents go out and do their DFA's and then sit in their classes in the afternoon. We do school in the morning and then play in the afternoon, make crafts, or go on a field trip. We especially like the field trips! Twister is always fun!
