The best blog from the desert - Bill Torbitt from the dunes of the Namib. Friday, May 01, 2009. Here I am again, and happy May Day. Although my web host has gone off the radar (the one who provides easier pointers to these blogs) my pages have mysteriously reappeared, so here goes. That's right, you STAY IN BED. Why show up at a dusty dilapidated stadium to hear a politician. Who turns up 2 hours late and can barely read his speech anyway? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Here I am a...

The best blog from the desert - Bill Torbitt from the dunes of the Namib. Sunday, February 25, 2007. My carpenter and I. Some say it is not nice to refer to a 90 year old as a thieving c unt. I respond that this simply makes him a very old thieving c unt. As a recent visiting SA stand-up put it: “I had a pupkewitz on a sensitive part of my anatomy, but luckily it received medical attention in time…” Indeed. Saturday, February 17, 2007. All you culture vultures,. Saturday, February 10, 2007. And cynical, ...

Comment on namibnews.net. Tuesday, September 30, 2008. The bail-out is dead. You can tell that from the immediately following scintillating Bushism: "We will continue to move forward with Congress to develop a strategy of moving forward to solve this problem" or words to that effect (couldn't be bothered to copy and paste them. Savour the unexpected and delicious moment - a rare instance of people power deflating the vested interest politicians. Again, why the need for a bail-out? Links to this post.

comment on namibnews.net: Opposition what opposition?
http://namibinternational.blogspot.com/2014/12/opposition-what-opposition.html
Comment on namibnews.net. Monday, December 08, 2014. As the nominal runner-up in the presidential race, McHenry Venaani admitted, the ambition of so-called opposition politicians is not to advance alternative paths for the country, but simply to get a parliamentary seat, again, not as a platform for their political voice, but simply to be assured of a nice pension and a seat on the gravy train. comment on namibnews.net: Torture and denial
http://namibinternational.blogspot.com/2014/12/torture-and-denial.html
Comment on namibnews.net. Sunday, December 14, 2014. The first point was that the CIA had never denied that these 'techniques' had taken place, but had justified them on the grounds that in the wake of 9/11 it was urgently necessary to obtain information from captured suspects to possible future or imminent attacks on the US; the assumption being that such information was obtained, to prevent further attacks, and that the extreme techniques were therefore justified. The best blog from the desert - Bill Torbitt from the dunes of the Namib. Saturday, December 29, 2007. THE MOST ORIGINAL STREET CHRISTMAS DECORATION. A tree of paint tins in downtown Windhoek. 10/10 for originality, about 3/10 for visual success. Amusing to think of the mini- treefurore. Last year, when a beautifully decorated tree in African theme was torn down by the precinct owner in Swakopmund. Because it was not 'traditional' (German? And a few beers on the beach, with some ice cream for afters.

http://namibinternational.blogspot.com/2015/01/the-distance-between-paris-and-baga.html
Comment on namibnews.net. Thursday, January 15, 2015. The distance between Paris and Baga. This has been a momentous week for France – as momentous as any in its history, according to most mainstream commentators. Really? What about the 3 million Frenchmen killed in the first world war? Or the Nazi occupation of Paris and most of France, lasting four years? Why has France such a high Muslim population? What was the last massacre on the streets of Paris? Such is the background of French, muslim relations.

Comment on namibnews.net. Tuesday, October 14, 2008. Sorry to seem a bit stupid, but can anyone explain to me the difference between:. Bailing out the banks. Making funds 'available' to banks. Buying a stake in the banks. Guaranteeing the loans between banks. Buying up the bank's 'toxic' assets. Wish I'd taken up banking) And don't national parliaments have to approve this sort of thing, rather than being simply announced by presidents in their rose gardens? What of the $700bn US bailout? Are the banks g...
