Matthew Archer: Busy Busy
http://matthewarcher.blogspot.com/2012/05/busy-busy.html
I've been busy with school (exams and dissertation) lately, hence the lack of blogging. I'm too busy to breathe until late August, but rest assured,. If i make it through math camp at Yale. Once I make it through math camp at Yale, I'll start blogging like a fiend. I'll be a doing a PhD in environmental economics there, so I should have plenty of stuff to gripe about. Until then, smile. If you're not familiar with the Mississippi Power Company's integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) project called Transport Integrated Gasification (TRIG), you should read about it here. MPC claims that this new technology, which is being developed and tested in China, is a cleaner way to burn coal. That may be true, but a "cleaner way to burn coal" is still very, very dirty. And with coal, CO 2. Is the least of our worries; secondary emissions like sulfur and mercury are much more dangerous.

Let's Talk about Rich People, or Why Poor and Middle Class Republicans Are Stupid. There's a lot of debate right now over tax increases on the wealthy. Obama and most Democrats suggest that extraordinarily rich Americans should honor their social contract. And pay a more substantial tax rate than their secretaries, while Republicans argue that this is "unfair" and "socialist.". Obviously, there are exceptions. Obama is trying to fix this via the Buffett Rule. Let's look again at Lloyd Blankfein. About 41...

There's an important point that Paul Krugman's been making lately, that a lot of people don't seem to get. Having a car to get from place A to place B may be necessary, but it's obviously not sufficient. You also have to have gas, you need a driver, and you need someone willing to turn the key. Same logic. Of course, there's an important relationship between economic downturns and the environment (there's an excellent paper by Stern and Bowen. Also, if anyone says Solandrya to me, I'll slap a.

Taxing consumption is still wrong. Courtesy of John Tamny at Forbes a few weeks ago lauding Eduardo Saverin (of Facebook fame) for renouncing his US citizenship so he won't have to pay capital gains taxes, or "feed the beast" according to this. Then he says we should switch to a consumption tax. Well, I've talked about this before. Here's the graph I made:. Consumption taxes aren't fair. They don't even make economic sense. Get it? Also, if anyone says Solandrya to me, I'll slap a. Conscience of a Liberal.

We are the 53%. I'm sure by now most of you have seen " We Are The 53%. A silly backlash against Occupy Wall Street that confuses lack of opportunities with laziness. They chose the number 53 based on a report. From the Tax Policy Center that says almost 47% of people pay no federal income taxes. This number doesn't reflect the reality that the overwhelming majority of those people make less than $20,000 a year, but when you're a hardworking member of the 53%, numbers are a triviality. Oh wait. A self-pr...

I read this a few weeks ago in Berry's collection of essays The Way of Ignorance. And it's completely relevant right now. Any added emphasis, i.e. italics or bold, is mine. A recent blog post by Paul Krugman. Is equally relevant, and I encourage you to read it after this, to see how two great thinkers come to a similar conclusion.). We Americans are not usually thought to be a submissive people, but of course we are. Why else would we allow our country to be destroyed? How do we submit? If we honor at al...

A Few Thoughts on the Impulse to Cheat. Cheating is a serious offense in any walk of life, but nowhere is it more disgusting than in Academia. Surely, there are two competing emotions that a cheater's decision must entail, one that necessitates it and one that allows it. The first, and most obvious, is a rightful sense of inferiority. Paradoxically, the second is a false sense of superiority. The advantage he has unfairly bestowed upon himself. This feeling of entitlement is what allows cheating to h...
