A History of Migration: November 2008

http://ahistoryofmigration.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

A History of Migration. Sunday, November 23, 2008. Step by step to Guge. Never heard of it until early this morning. Michael Wood's documentary (BBC) aired on PBS and caught my attention. Somehow, the sight of solitary people walking through deserts (and mountains) has always captured me (re: Kwai Chang Cain in Kung Fu. But as for Guge, Michael Buckley has much to say about it in this excerpt. From his 2002 book, Heartlands: Travels in the Tibetan World. Who are they today? To think that the Catholic chu...

A History of Migration: Fascination: WW2 era Sakhalin, aka Karafuto

http://ahistoryofmigration.blogspot.com/2014/10/fascination-ww2-era-sakhalin-aka.html

A History of Migration. Friday, October 17, 2014. Fascination: WW2 era Sakhalin, aka Karafuto. I wondered the other day about a place like Sakhalin, where Siberians/Russians and Japanese/East Asians have a shared history. Not necessarily a harmonious history, but I know so little of it. Maybe some long-time generational fisherman families from Hokkaido consider Sakhalin their adopted home. But what I found in this piece by Mariya Sevela was intriguing, informative and stirred up my imagination.

The DNA evidence has been around for some years now, but it's still fresh for a layman like me. Global. People everywhere, though not all people, are interested in these details, of the proof about their origins. If I had Polynesian blood and science told me my ancestors were from Taiwan, I'd be tripping out. Documentary: MADE IN TAIWAN. CrashCourse on Capt. Cook. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

A History of Migration: October 2009

A History of Migration. Monday, October 19, 2009. Natural disasters and migration. Yet another typhoon is closing in on the Philippines. I can't help wondering, with all the horrible typhoons and hurricanes that hit that region of the world - an area that is widely believed to be launching pad for migration to the Pacific - if natural disasters were a major reason for exploration. Love is a Strong Word: Lovin' Life ... not quite there

http://loveisastrongword.blogspot.com/2007/08/lovin-life-not.html

Love is a Strong Word. Friday, August 3, 2007. Lovin' Life . not quite there. A good pal of mine just told me, well by IM, that he just finished another annual vacation trip. This year, he went to Las Vegas, San Francisco and the Philippines. He's consistent about this. With a high-stress job, he likes big-fun trips. Vegas for gambling, San Fran for friends and family, and P.I. for more family. Me? Love It's about loving yourself, too. I gotta get back there one day. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Ƒantasy football by hondareport.com. Friday, August 29, 2008. New season, new approach. If anything, I want this blog to reflect the league from year to year, complete with final standings, champion and team logos. Haven't done logos since the '06 season, but that'll be fun once drafts are done. Kailua Sea Warriors (formerly Kailua Zebras). Ala Wai ToxiCudas (formerly Ala Wai Moonrise). Ala Wai Soul: Can Bowl-O-Drome be saved?

http://alawaisoul.blogspot.com/2009/03/can-bowl-o-drome-be-saved.html

Okay maybe was stank sometimes . but was good fun! Friday, March 27, 2009. Can Bowl-O-Drome be saved? Yes, I know the property and structure (what's left of it) are owned by Bishop Estate. That doesn't mean there can't be a creative, inspiring vision. Here's my vision, and whether you find it lacking in any way is just fine by me. 1 Restore the building. That's right. Crumbling, aging and musty, the building is a true landmark that was a sidekick to the old Honolulu Stadium. Doubt me? I wish there were a...

Okay maybe was stank sometimes . but was good fun! Wednesday, August 26, 2009. This machine is still on the ‘Iolani school campus after decades. As kids, we used to walk over from Ala Wai Park to Club 100 for ice-cold water to drink. Sometimes we'd venture to the tennis courts at ‘Iolani, where they also had ice-water fountains PLUS this ice-cream machine. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Boys and Girls Club. Okay maybe was stank sometimes . but was good fun! Friday, March 27, 2009. McCully Fire Station update. Most of my friends will probably agree: one of the best things about the old fire station was the soda machine out back. Was only 25¢ for a can of Diamond Head, circa 1978. Grape and Strawberry were my favorites. Labels: McCully-Moiiliili Fire Station. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Boys and Girls Club. McCully Bike and Sporting Goods. HIC / Blaisdell Arena. Okay maybe was stank sometimes . but was good fun! Sunday, September 13, 2009. The Michael Jackson tribute mural gets the attention, but it's the other mural that gets to my heart. Kokua Market moved in years ago, but before that, the location was the site of Mo‘iliæili Store. Good memories of that place and the nice ladies who worked there. My mom always liked shopping there.
