FACTS AND STATISTICS ABOUT HIV and AIDS. HIV infection rate is down 33 percent worldwide since 2001. AIDS-related deaths have also dropped 30 percent since 2005, when the highest mortality rates were recorded. There are currently 35.3 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS, according to the most recent data from the World Health Organization. Scientists have identified more than 60 different strains of the HIV 1 virus, with each type typically found predominantly in a specific region of the world.
