THE LYCHGATE

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE CHURCH. HISTORY OF THE LYCH GATE. The lych-gate is made of oak, taken from one of the oldest farms of Hyde, which stood in Church Street, opposite the old School. It bears the inscription "Erected by Thomas Ferns Handford, Fern Lea, Hyde, 1885." In the photograph the origimal gates can be seen. Older members of the congregation will remember it with the gates, which were removed at some time later. THE LYCH GATE AS IT WAS.

StGeorge's Church, Hyde, Cheshire. HISTORY OF THE BELLS. The first peal was rung on Palm Sunday, March 20th, 1853, by the Society of Change Ringers from the Parish Church, Mottram. The second tablet contains the inscription:- "The St. George's Society of Change Ringers, Hyde, on the 29th day of March, 1858. Seven members of the above Society, with Mr. James Adams, of Ashton, rang on these bells a Peal of Stedman Triples, consist- ing of 5,400 changes, in 3 hours and 6 mmutes.

St George's Church, Hyde. It is interesting that Tameside Local History library have a copy of a photograph showing the chancel as built. The rerodos is in five panels not the present three. The source of the picture is unknown. It is shown here by permission of Tameside Libraries. It is known that the church building was extensively altered internally in 1883. When the pulpit was removed from the centre of the church and the plaster removed from the octagonal columns.

THE HEARSE HOUSE

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE CHURCH. The Hearse-house was erected in 1841, out of the balance left from the Organ Fund (see previous references to organ). Over the door is a stone inscribed with the date, and bearing also a representation, of a skull and cross-bones. The St. George's hearse-house continued to be used for its original purpose until near the year 1870, when the custom of churches providing vehicles for funerals fell into disuse.
