Alan's Mary Ward Sculpture Course Blog

Wednesday, 14 March 2012. The following is a blog about my very amateur attempt at sculpture. I first started a 12 week course in Sept 2009 (3 hours a week) at The Mary Ward Centre in the West End of London. I created this blog for my family, friends, tutor and possibly fellow class members. I shouldn't think it will be of interest to anyone else. Start at the beginning if you want to see the progress of the sculptures in order. Since then I have done several other terms at The Mary Ward Centre but also.

Alan's Mary Ward Sculpture Course Blog: March 2011

http://www.alansmarywardsculpturecourseblog.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 15 March 2011. Year 2 Week 22. Today felt like a productive day. The black stripe across the top of the head is to remind me not to file away the ears! I rounded off the tail and tried to deal with the missing chunk from it. I used a saw towards the end of the 3 hour class to take out some more chunks between the legs and under the head. This caused the major difference I think. Looking much more like a squirrel now. Labels: The results of Year 2 week 22 of my sculpture course (14/3/11).

Alan's Mary Ward Sculpture Course Blog: July 2010

Thursday, 1 July 2010. Week 3 of Voluptuous Female Form. The following photo is the grand unveiling of all of the bronzes back from the foundry. I didn't have any trouble recognizing mine. Some of the bronzes came back smoother than others which the tutor suggested was probably due to the sand mixture we each made for the molds. As you can see below mine was one of the less smooth. Below is my bronze at the end of the day's work. Labels: Week 3 of Voluptuous Female Form. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Monday, 2 May 2011. Summer 2011 Session 1. The term has finished at Mary Ward now so I am hoping to finish the squirrel off at home over the summer. These photos are after one session in the garden at home. Mainly filing. Labels: The results of the summer of 2011 at home (2/5/11). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Alan's Mary Ward Sculpture Course Blog: November 2009

http://www.alansmarywardsculpturecourseblog.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Friday, 27 November 2009. 3 hours of fine tuning with chisels and a little bit of sanding in the places a chisel couldn't quite reach. I think I'm nearly finished on it now. I'm realising that you can just go on fiddling forever if you don't stop yourelf at some point. I like the front view better than the profile. A little bit more fine tuning and them some stain or polish next week. Labels: The results of week 10 of my sculpture course (23/11/09). Monday, 16 November 2009. Thursday, 12 November 2009.

Alan's Mary Ward Sculpture Course Blog: October 2009

http://www.alansmarywardsculpturecourseblog.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 27 October 2009. I built up a sweat this week with lots of sawing and some chiselling. This is the back. It is the only bit with any strong grain. This is the front. Not much to see from this angle really. The two side views give you a better idea of where I'm heading. I'm quite pleased with what I've achieved this week. Tempting to just leave it here! It doesn't look anything like an Easter Island Head but is interesting in it's own way! Wednesday, 21 October 2009. Thursday, 15 October 2009.

Alan's Marathon Challenge 2011. My journey of a thousand miles, including the Brighton Marathon, for charity. Saturday, 31 December 2011. 365 days, 1016 miles. So, a year of running is over. After crossing the 1000 mile line a couple of weeks ago I had a full week off running in the week before Christmas, and then clocked up a few leisurely miles in an unusually mild and briefly dry Glasgow on Boxing Day. Thirdly, a big thank you to Michaela at Practical Action and Ceris at CLIC Sargent for your support,...
