Alaska 2008

Buildergrrl and the Flying Fish take off for parts North. 14 Fishing for Rainbows. June 16, 2009. It was early in the season at the Royal Wolf Lodge and we were graciously offered a small cabin where we could stay and visit with Kate and Kev for a few days and go fishing for rainbows if we liked. This was more than we'd expected and we were touched by Chris and Linda's hospitality. Loading up for a ride to the river. Despite our layers of warm clothes the water was frigid. This early in the season, t...

Alaska 2008: 9. Seldovia

http://www.alaska322mx.blogspot.com/2008/11/seldovia.html

Buildergrrl and the Flying Fish take off for parts North. Route of flight: SXQ-HOM-SOV. Seldovia is about 15 miles SSW of Homer across Kachemak Bay. It is a picture-postcard town of log cabins and homes perched on stilts above the lagoon. We landed in light and fluky winds and took a look around for a place to tie down for the night. After a quick scout of the airfield, we took a walk to town - optimistic about finding a meal. Fishing the slough at the end of the runway. We crossed and continued to the h...

Alaska 2008: 3. The Trench

http://www.alaska322mx.blogspot.com/2008/11/trench.html

Buildergrrl and the Flying Fish take off for parts North. Route of flight: CYZY-CAP6-CAJ9-CYQH. June 8, 2008. Mackenzie is the decision point for the route north to the Yukon. There are three options: the AlCan, the Cassiar, and the Trench. Kechica River and the Cassiar Range. Of the three routes, the AlCan is considered the safest. The Trench is known as most direct, but also the one which leaves you fewest options if you run into trouble. The Cassiar is somewhere in between. Hidden valley off the Trench.

Alaska 2008: 8. Prince William Sound

http://www.alaska322mx.blogspot.com/2008/11/prince-william-sound.html

Buildergrrl and the Flying Fish take off for parts North. 8 Prince William Sound. June 12, 2008. Route of flight: CKU-PAVD-PASX. After fueling ourselves (Italian in Cordova) and the planes (AvGas at the float dock) we took off from Cordova under clear skies and followed the coastline north and through a narrow inlet to Valdez. Port Valdez is a spectacular mountain-rimmed cove, and it's the northernmost port which remains free of ice throughout the winter. Oil tanker terminal at Port of Valdez. The low co...

Follow the KTeam around the US of A! Posted by: Kevin and Kate. January 9, 2009. Tampa and Jack Browns! Future of seasonal palate! We were only 45 minutes from Winter Haven, and for all of you who don’t speak pilot, that is where Jack Brown’s Seaplane base is! There was no way Kevin was going to miss that! My big sis worked there for a while and I had visited her a few times and met the Brown’s crew. It was great to see the base and Kevin took a cub out with Tristan Raab! Laquo; Charleston, Savannah.

Follow the KTeam around the US of A! Posted by: Kevin and Kate. January 11, 2009. Another long drive, we went through Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and just the beginning of Louisiana. We stopped in Mobile, AL to stretch our legs and grab lunch. Now that, is the dirty dirty south! Not to say that it was a dirty town, it was thick in…. I don’t really know how to describe it… so we’ll just go with dirty dirty south…. Beautiful Balconies were all over the French Quarter. Some of the neighborhoods looked lik...

Follow the KTeam around the US of A! Posted by: Kevin and Kate. January 3, 2009. Two of the best south coastal cities. We set up camp at the KOA in Wilmington, our first one of the trip and one of the nicest camps we have seen yet. Toured the town a little and got some sushi! The downtown was pretty quiet since it was New Years, everything was shut down… It was pretty chilly, so we headed back to camp to our warm little trailer. Rode into Charleston around 6 and set up camp. I had called a high schoo...

Follow the KTeam around the US of A! Posted by: Kevin and Kate. January 19, 2009. The drive the next day was awesome! We stopped at a pull off and watched a colony of elephant seals, several had just given birth to pups! We stopped at a lighthouse and checked out the rocky coast. There were areas where surfers clogged the road along with the people watching them! We had a pit stop at a local farmers market and had some of the local fair for lunch! Kate on the beach just south of Big Sur.

We swung through LA to see another one of Kevin’s cousins, Ben and his gal Kim. They are going to UCLA and live just blocks from some serious Hollywood action! We went out for some Thai and they showed us some of the neighborhood. The closest thing we could find to the Hollywood sign! Laquo; San Diego Sunshine!
